Georgia O'Keeffe's tie to the art world was Alfred Stieglitz. Alfred Stieglitz was one of the pioneers of Photography. The way that Georgia O'Keeffe met Stieglitz was through her charcoal drawings which fascinated him. One of O'Keeffe's friends convinced her to send these drawings to Stieglitz and a he became amazed by the drawings and had to meet her. Alfred Stieglitz was already married when he met Georgia O'Keeffe so he divorced and things went from there. They fell in love and O'Keeffe became a large subject in Stieglitz's photography. During this time period female artists were not very well known or given any recognition but O'Keeffe's relationship with Stieglitz helped her to become more known throughout the world.

The First time that O'Keeffe visited and fell in love with New Mexico was 1929. It wasn't until 3 years after her husband Alfred Stieglitz had passed away that she moved to Abiquiú New Mexico. She had started painting the dry colorful landscape before this time, but once she moved there is when she really started to crank out the bones and colorful land. She once said “It’s my private mountain. It belongs to me. God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it.” her referring to the Pedernal Mountain that she could she from studio at Ghost Ranch. This mountain was part of many of the paintings she made up until her death March 6, 1986 at the age of 98. This is the place she would remain till her death and be her final resting place. Georgia O'Keeffe had her ashes were scattered atop Pedernal mountain to make her connection with it eternal.
