He provides Enrique with food, clothes, and even shares a bed with him. However, he betrays Enrique with his new girlfriend. Therefore, his purpose then was to betray Enrique again so he would have to move someplace else. He plays daddy for a while, but then he quits. I think he is only driven by minor guilt/obligation that Enrique is his son. However, he is impacted by his new girlfriend who convinces him to basically abandon Enrique. I think they are included so that the question of Enrique's dad's whereabouts is answered. Without it, readers would wonder why his father wasn't in the picture, but now we know why. He is also included to show another example of how Enrique was yet again betrayed in life.
