Research Experience for Teachers Program:

Register now!
Our RET program is a 7-week full-time VIRTUAL research experience (June 14 – July 30, 2021) where teachers are placed with Penn State science or engineering faculty to conduct authentic research that contributes to the on-going work of their laboratory placement. Teachers also receive professional development from CSATS science education faculty to help translate their experience to the classroom through a classroom research project. For participation in the summer, teachers receive a $5,000 stipend along with up to $1,000 of classroom supplies to implement their research project with their students. An additional $1,500 stipend is available for teachers who implement their classroom research project during academic year following their summer research and conduct action research culminating in an Impact Report.

ONLINE LEARNING MODULES: the Science of COVID-19

AUDIENCE: Educators in PA
Penn State Center for Science and the Schools (CSATS) is excited to announce that we have developed online learning modules, The Science of COVID-19, along with experts in virology, epidemiology, agent-based modeling, and public health preparedness. This introductory course allows secondary students to learn about COVID-19 through the lenses of three distinct scientific fields while engaging in the practices of scientists to understand how researchers investigate and take action against a new virus. The course is made up of three self-paced modules: 1) virology, 2) epidemiology, and 3) public health preparedness. Teachers can determine which aspects of the course are most appropriate for their students. The modules do not need to be completed in order and the use of the course is flexible. When teachers register, they gain access to resources that they can modify to support the use of this course in their classrooms.

MUSEUM ADVENTURE WEEKS FOR KIDS ARE BACK!

Museum Adventure Weeks center on the creative exploration of the Everhart Museum collection and the Nay Aug Park environment. Each week, campers are invited to experience a new topic or theme that uses both art and science in its hands-on, multi-modal approach to learning. Instructors will use visual thinking strategies and inquiry-based learning to talk about art and art objects from around the globe.

This summer, the Everhart will offer two unique options for young museum explorers, Adventures in the Museum and Adventures at Home.

Weld-a-Saurus Camp for KIDS

The Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County will be hosting a welding summer camp called Weld-a-suarus. Students entering grades 7 or 8 in the fall of 2021 are eligible to attend. Campers, during the first week, will learn how to use a MIG welder and basic welding techniques to transform a steel plate into the skeleton of a dinosaur. Campers who attend the second week will have an opportunity to further their skills in an advanced session by taking on a slightly larger project. Campers will have fun learning about:

● Beading and padding
● Gas metal arc welding
● MIG welding
● In-demand technical careers with local opportunities
