Strategy: Comprehensive risk reduction sexual education

Current Climate: This strategy has an evidence rating of "scientifically supported" however, Texas continues to be one of 12 states that do not require sex education in grade schools. Texas school districts independently decide if sexual education will be taught. If a district chooses to offer a course, the following guidelines must be followed:

-must be an elective course in high school,

-must use DSHS approved curriculum which has no current regulation regarding medically accurate instruction

-may not address consent or LGBTQIA+ topics

-must emphasize abstinence and HIV prevention
(Texas state profile - SIECUS. 2023)

I would utilize this strategy to

-curate evidence-based, basic sexual health information that peer educators can teach to serve as "leveling" information for students who may not have had sufficient sexual health education in high school

-use STI risk reduction methods as in outreach and education efforts

-present this strategy and the Texas policy on sexual health education as a case study within the one credit hour health class

-identify the gaps within abstinence-plus sex education as evidence of the need for funding for STI prevention education and outreach for the college population

Long-acting Reversible Contraception Access

Long-acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs) are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, have few medical contraindications, and are convenient and discreet methods of birth control. They can be inserted and removed by clinicians in many types of clinical settings, including school-based health centers and mobile clinics. I would use this method to address unplanned pregnancies among Latina college students by:

Ensuring campus-based healthcare providers include LARCs in contraceptive counseling discussions along with a range of other highly effective options

Minimizing barriers to insertion, such as having to schedule follow-up appointments

Ensuring campus providers are trained in LARC education, insertion, and removal

Securing funding so LARCs are available at low or no-cost at campus student health centers
