The book 59 Hours by Johnny Kovatch interested me because I wanted to know more about a real life survival story. I also wanted to see how a real life event would be told through a book perspective. The story focuses on Nick Markowitz, a 15 year old boy, who becomes the innocent victim in a chain of events sparked by his older brothers debt.

The three major events of the book include the kidnapping of Nick Markowitz, the 59 hours of captivity, and the final decision to kill Nick.

Nick was taken in debt by his older brother. Jesse James kidnapped Nick. The moment shifts his life from normal teenage problems to a dangerous situation.

Nick is passed around between different people. At first, it seems like he’s being treated okay, going to parties and hanging out, but underneath, there’s constant danger. This false sense of safety makes Nick form an untruthful opinion about the situation.

The moment Jesse decides to have Nick killed is the most tragic and defining event of the whole book. It not only ends Nick's life, but ruins the lives of everyone involved. It impacts Nick’s family forever and brings national attention to the crime.

The story takes place in the summer of 2000, mostly in California. Most of the main action happens in San Fernando Valley (where Nick was kidnapped), and Santa Barbara (where Nick was later killed). The San Fernando valley was seen as a safe town, yet a lot of violence took place there, in Santa Barbara, Nick was surrounded by a lot of fake people who didn’t help him in the situation he was in. If his so called friends had called the cops, the problem could’ve been solved much sooner. Since the story takes place in the early 2000s, it was before basic technology was created. Cell phones, social media, and tracking devices were unknown at this time. Since these advancement were made yet, it made it difficult for Nick to call for help.

I think the author wrote this book to show how quickly things can go wrong, and how important it is to trust the right people. Nick was a young boy with hopes, dreams and a future that was taken from him in a split second. Nick didn’t know any better and trusted Jesse, but it ended up badly in the end. The details with Nick's emotions shows that the air wanted us to know how he was feeling. The final chapters leave the reader with a sense of sadness and reflection on Nick's death, and on how avoidable the situation was. While not much is publicly known about Johnny's personal connection, I would assume he researched the case deeply, and possibly talked to the people involved in the story.
