Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust (Birth to 18 months)

The first stage is one of the most important. Trust vs. mistrust. As a young child, you develop and start to grow trust with family members and close relatives/friends. As a young child, I found myself being able to trust people that my parents trusted as well. If my parents didn't trust someone, neither did I.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (18 months to three years)

The second stage is where children start to learn how to be independent and do things on their own. In most cases, children are very young at this age, so I asked my mom what an example of stage two would be for me. When I was a young child, my parents would always clean up after me, however when I turned 2, I was determined to clean everything on my own. It took 45 minutes to clean my toys, and they were all put in the wrong places, but I did it on my own.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt (from 3-5 years)

When thinking about how 3 to 5 year olds may act in stage three, I reflect on how I use to play with other kids around my age. When I was a young child, I was very bossy and always wanted to be the mom friend. Sometimes I would make people play games, but I would give them less things to do or bad roles. I saw myself getting put in timeout a lot, which is why this picture stood out to me the most.

Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority (middle school years from 6 to 11)

This is when a child is told to explore and try to do things on their own. When they succeed at the things they have been told to do on their own, they know that they are capable or doing the task. When I was in middle school, I wanted to get a job but no place would hire someone in middle school. There is one place in my town who does a newspaper service regarding things going on in my hometown. They hired me, and gave me a huge route, which I did not think I would be able to handle, but after completing it once a week for a month, I felt extremely accomplished and knew that I would be able to do it until I could get a job at 16 years old.

Stage 5: Identity vs. Confusion (Teen years from 12-18)

Stage five is something that everyone has experienced at one point or another, but may kids face it in their teenage years. These years are when children are changing and developing into mini adults as a past teacher of mine calls that age group. Many changes are occurring in their bodies so they can have a lot of identity issues and concerns. When I was in high school, I found myself feeling weird, unwanted, and confused as to what was always going on. It is a stage that children feel alone and not important, but it is normal to feel this way due to all of the changes.

As a young adult, I have recently just entered this stage of life. The relationships have changed from just friends to people having boyfriends/girlfriends/partners, etc. As someone who currently does not have a boyfriend, I feel like I am in a huge isolation era in my life while some of my closest friends are in their intimacy era with their boyfriends. This stage is when young adults-middle aged adults are able to form and grow intimate relationships with other young adults to middle aged people.

Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle-aged from 40-65 years)

During this stage of life is when people are busy with all different aspects of life. For example they are dealing with work, raising kids, keeping a living space clean, family obligations, etc. There is a lot going on in this stage of life. When reading about this stage when I was in high school, my first thought was everything my parents do. Both my parents work full time jobs, take care of a house, pay for both my brother and I's college tuitions, raise us, feed us, etc. This is a big stage in life because it is one of the busiest stages where you do a lot of stuff all at once. It may feel like you are juggling a lot because you typically are.

This is a stage of life where older adults will reflect on life, and may focus on regrets and guilts that they have. They are thinking back on all the things they did or didn't do. They can become very down because they are focusing on a lot of negative things rather than positives. I fortunately have never had to experience things like this or have a family member discuss feeling this way. This stage of life seems depressing.
