Date: 7 October 1763

The Procalmation of 1763 closed down colonial expansion westward. It was issued by King George III and declared all lands west of the Appalachian Divide off-limits to colonial settlers. This proclamation also told colonists that they could not buy land from Native Americans or make agreements with the Native Americans. The document stated that only licenced traders could travel westward and deal with Native Americans as well. It was meant to protect the colonists from angry Native Americans and to protect the Native Amercicans from colonial attacks.

Date: 5 April 1764

The Sugar Act was a law passed by the British Parliament that was designed to make revenue from the American colonists and to prevent the smuggling of sugar and molasses from the West Indies. This law set a three penny tax per gallon on the sugar and molasses that was imported into the colonies. The American colonists did not appreciate this act until the tax was lowered the to one penny per gallon of sugar and molasses. Also, the Sugar Act gave stricter bonding regulations to shipmasters, whose cargoes were often subject to inspection and seizure.

Date: 22 March 1765

The Stamp Act was a law passed on the American colonies that required the colonists to pay a tax on every piece of paper they used. The money collected from this act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists hated this act because taxes on colonial trade had always been viewed as measures to regulate commerce, not raising money. Also, the Stamp Act was viewed as direct attempt by England to raise money in the the colonies without the approval of colonial legislatures. The American people believed that if they accepted this act, then it would open the door for more troublesome taxes to be passed.

Date: 24 March 1765

The Quartering Act was a law made by Britain, for the colonies. This law stated that the colonies were required to house British soldiers by barracks provided by the colonies. If all of the soldiers could not fit in the barracks, they were housed in public houses, such as local inns or ale houses, and then if needed, houses and barns. Many colonists disliked having soldiers amidst their cities, which led to tension between the British soldiers and the colonists.

Date: 7-25 October 1765

The Stamp Act Congress was a intercolonial meeting to plan tempered resistance to new tax from Britain. This meeting was called by the Massachusetts assembly, at the urging of James Otis. This Stamp Act Congress met in New York City with nine colonies, represented by 27 delegates, present. The delegates approved a 14-point Declaration of Rights and Grievences that was formed mostly by John Dickerson of Pennsylvania. This declaration echoed the resolves of the Virginia House of Burgesses, which stated that colonial taxation could only be carried out by colonial assemblies. Also, these delegates singled out the Stamp Act for special criticism. The delegates at the Stamp Act Congress were more conservative than many of the radicals in the colonial assemblies. The Declaration of Rights and Grievences was sent to the King of England, but was rejected.
