Repetition is described by Ratliff as "a gimmick" or "a neutral marker". He also makes it very clear that repetition is not "one unchanging tone, or exact copy of a tone, over and over, without evolution." Ratliff says that this would give you no reason to keep listening. He also says that repetition in media exists for many reasons such as to create humor, prove a point, exaggerate a certain idea, or to grab the listener's attention. I do agree with Ratliff's arguments regarding this musical element because I think repetition never exists for no reason, and that it always has a specific and important purpose to the piece it is presented in. One example Ratliff used to explain repetition was Family Guy's Peter Griffin and his repetitive knee pain and injuries and the noise he makes over and over again. This type of repetition creates humor and gives the tv show a particular gimmick.
