These are referrals in which there are clear and present signs of acute symptoms of moderate to severe mental disorder and there is a strong likelihood of considerable deterioration in mental state if left untreated.

Urgent referrals should be responded to within three working days after receiving the referral, or as soon as possible based on the level of risk. This does not mean that the young person has to be seen in the clinic within this time frame, but rather that contact must be made with the family, with the aim to arrange a meeting.

These are referrals where there are clear and present signs of acute symptoms of moderate to severe mental disorder which have been ongoing but can be managed in the short-term by the young persons support network (i.e family or other services involved).

Routine referrals should be seen withing 12 weeks or sooner however this is depending on service demand and the length of the wait list for each clinic.

There is a variety of reasons why a referral may not be appropriate for the service- many of these reasons are outlined in the 'Referrals Not Accepted by CAMHS section of the Community CAMHS padlet. The common reason for this is that there is no evidence of a moderate to severe mental disorder present.

In these cases, the GP/referrer will be notified by letter of the reasons it is not been taken on by CAMHS, and alternative referrals will be provided, e.g Services like primary care, Teen Counselling, or family resource centers might be a better fit to meet the needs of this young person.
