Convicts were sent to Australia primarily due to Britain's need for a penal colony after the American Revolutionary War. The First Fleet, carrying 736 convicts, arrived at Botany Bay on January 18, 1788. Conditions on board were harsh, with overcrowding and limited food. Upon arrival, the convicts faced a challenging environment, including a rugged landscape and a lack of shelter. Over time, many convicts adapted to their new surroundings, contributing to the development of Australian society. The transportation of convicts to Australia continued until 1868, with around 80,000 convicts sent to different parts of the continents. it was a push factor Convicts pushed people to migrate because crowded prisons and tough conditions in England led officials to send offenders to colonies. This gave the convicts a chance for a new beginning after having served their sentence
