It was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche mark from West Berlin.

Berlin Blockade caused Stalin to lose face against the Americans. The public, seeing Capitalism's victory over Communism, were disturbed by the aggression of Stalin's actions; greater opposition to Communism began to grow, and the relations between East and West further stagnated, the rift between ideologies spreading ever wider apart. NATO was established during the Berlin Blockade - the perception of the Soviet Union as a threat had been increased by the blockade.

Why it is important?

This activity could have easily triggered another war.
