After World War II, the Berlin wall separated Berlin into East and West Berlin. The Soviets controlled East Berlin (and East Germany), while the Germans controlled West Berlin and Western Germany. The other symbolic thing about it, was how the USA airlifted food and supplies to East Berlin against the wishes of the Soviets.
