Salta is the most visited tourist province in the Argentine Northwest. In May and June 2023 alone, it received a total of 355,174 tourists from all over the country (85%), with the remaining 15% including tourists from international markets, the largest of which were Brazil and then France, but also from other countries such as Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, England, Bolivia, and Spain, with an economic impact of $34,805,631,304.

In addition to the colonial-style towns and attractive landscapes offered by the various biomes throughout the provincial territory, in the city center, there are some highly recommended tourist sites.

The MAAM: In 1999, on the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano, an Inca sanctuary was discovered. In it, three bodies were found in perfect preservation, thanks to environmental conditions. The cold, drought, and lack of oxygen kept them in a mummified state. (This scientific discovery earned the Guinness World Record for the highest archaeological site on the planet). The bodies correspond to a 7-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl (known as the "Lightning Girl" because she was struck by lightning at some point, leaving visible marks on her skin and attire), and the eldest, a 15-year-old (known as the "Maiden"). These are on display in the High Mountain Museum, located in front of the central 9 de Julio square.

Just one block from the central square on Caseros Street, you will find San Francisco Church. Its bell tower, at 54 meters in height, is considered the tallest in South America.

Not far from there, 500 meters down the same street, you'll find San Bernardo Convent, the oldest building in Salta and considered one of the most representative structures of the colonial era. It was founded on 19 July, 1846.

"San Miguel Market" is the most popular in the city, offering a wide variety of fresh products, cuisine, and crafts, among other miscellaneous items. It is located on San Martín Avenue, the most heavily traveled in the city and the worst for walking!🫣
