I had to work really hard. In college Calculus, I studied by working on every problem in the book that I had an answer for. I had a big whiteboard. If I got a problem wrong I would erase it and do it again. This affects me now because I tend to have high expectations for students in terms of intrinsic motivation. I could do the work and earn good grades but I could not connect the "why". Those connections came to me as I taught Geometry through the years. I would get so excited and the kids would think I was nuts. That struggle helped me look for common misconceptions that students may have and use that to adjust my teaching.
