THE BETROTHED

The first manuscript of the novel The Betrothed began to grow into shape in the years between 1821 and 1823, when the author called his work "Fermo e Lucia". Afterwards, he wanted to add two more characters, the "Monaca di Monza", a young lady who was forced to take the vows, and the "Innominato", an evil man who changed his personality by the end of the story, so in 1827 he turned his work in "Gli Sposi Promessi". Again, Manzoni wasn't sure of his work, so he worked really hard to change his work one last time, and that's the reason: the novel's language wasn't truly italian, it rather was Milan's speech. So finally, in 1840, he definetly named his work "I Promessi Sposi", in english "The Betrothed". This novel became really famous, because it's one of the most important and inspirational works for italian's literature. It talks about two humble lovers, Lucia and Renzo, whose marriage is thwarted by Don Rodrigo, but the story has a happy ending
