I really liked writing about Barbara Young in FIRST GEN because I am passionate about introducing young readers to ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Barbara didn't set out to be an activist for workers' rights but she saw a need and became a changemaker. We didn't get to interview I.M. Pei--he just turned 102 and his children said that he no longer gives interviews but still has a hand in designing. I love the illustrations, too! This is Agata's first book for young readers and I hope she does more! She is well-known in her birth country of Poland and just starting to be recognized in the US. I really liked writing about Sophia Grojsman because of her love of flowers and how she broke a gender-barrier in the perfume industry by becoming the world's greatest "nose!" My grandmother loved flowers, and imagining the garden she used to have before World War 2 helped her believe that a new life was possible for her in North America--and she came to her new country and grew the most amazing flower garden.
