I think that the book is entertaining in a sense, but it’s not necessarily the best I’ve read. I’m not sure how to describe it, but it doesn’t fill me with the same sense of completion that some other books do. The world building is well done, and keeps you curious about how some things work in their world. I’d like to know more about the war that went down, and why they needed genetically modified hornets to win. Really id generally like to learn more about the nature of some of these creatures.

I found the world more entertaining than the actual story itself. I may just be biased, but the story didn’t quite entertain me like I wanted it to. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad book or anything, it just wasn’t really my cuppa tea.

Inequality

One of the biggest themes of this book is inequality, because the Capital is seen as superior to the districts. In a way, it seems to me like they see the Districts as a sort of “Breeding ground” for the ultimate tribute or something. Like they’re just a plaything. Human lives that just don’t matter to them. Not in a normal sense, anyways. They’re out here betting on who dies and who lives.

“The Show Must Go On”

Another theme that seems to be important to the story is the importance of the hunger games in the society of the book. It’s so important that if there somehow isn’t a winner, for example Peeta and Katniss, the game-makers will find themselves in trouble. They have to satiate the audience, and the show MUST go on, or else.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice was another one of the bigger themes of the hunger games. There were multiple instances where sacrifice was significant for the story to continue the way it did. For instance, in the start of the book when Katniss volunteered in place of Prim. She would rather herself die in the games than allow her sister to even step into that ring.

So many times throughout the book was Peeta ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of Katniss's victory, even at the very end when it was only Katniss and Peeta remaining.

"It Has To Be This Way"

I think this song really follows along with the story of the hunger games. The lyrics are almost perfect for the theme of Katniss and just the story in general.

I feel like this is a solid representation of Katniss's perspective of the games.

She doesn't want to kill the other tributes, but in the end she has to. The gamemakers ensured that.

Several of the lyrics intertwine with certain aspects of the story, for instance

"I carved my own path, You followed your wrath" would be a good representation of the difference between herself, who had to hunt to survive, and the careers, who WANTED to participate in the game.

Relating to the hunger games are a little hard for me personally. But I also think it's a good way to represent Society the way its going, how the Rich have so much more power than the middle and lower classes. This also kind of mentions some of the dumb things rich people will do for like no reason. There's no reason for the games to exist or for the games to be significant, but they are, and they do.

The biggest theme I think I can relate to in this book is that things just are what they are, and sometimes you just have to put up with that and do everything you can.

Peeta

Peeta was probably the most interesting character in the book to me. Because at first, it seemed like he was just straight up unwilling to try in the games, but later we find out that he worked with the careers for a little bit. But he was never really "Bad intentioned," and never betrayed Katniss in any sense. He was loyal to the end, and didn't let the games change him.

There's just one question I have about him. Out of all the places, why confess right before the start of the hunger games? I get there was a plan to it and everything, but in the end we found out he wasn't faking it. So- Why in the games?

Also, they chose like the worst actor for peeta.

Rue

Rue didn't necessarily have much character growth, considering we didn't see much of her before she straight up dies. She was a good companion to Katniss while it lasted, though! She didn't seem as fleshed out to me and seemed more or less like a character to aid in Katniss's growth to me. Most of the time, she was just an Afraid, but Brave girl.

Effie

Effie is a MASSIVE supporting role in the story, aligning with the capital and gamemakers. Throughout the book, she's got that "High and mighty" rich person feel to her. A good example of the capital's greed. The reason why she does so good for that role is SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE she's supposed to represent the capital to District 12. She was the very one who picked the tributes from the District.

After some research, I have discovered she does have proper character development later in the series, but ignoring that, considering that seems to be from a future book, she's there as a representative of the capital and an announcer.
