He dies with 16 years in the beginning of the book. Khalil‘s death becomes a national news story. 
After he gets shot, the police left his body in the streets.He is shot in the second chapter. Khalil‘s death becomes a catalyst for protests against racial injustice throughout the community. He often has to take care of his mother Brenda, who is addicted to drugs and grandmother Mrs. Rosalie, who is going through chemotherapy and because of this she lost her job. He enjoyed the book Harry Potter, but he is afraid of animals. He and Starr have their first kiss at Vacation Bibel School and Khalil is five months, two weeks and three days older than Starr.
