HANNAH HOWE HBO Max Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney is an example of this face of oppression because she was exploited for having to do more nude scenes than her other co-stars including Zendaya. The claim was that famous actresses like Zendaya didn’t have to be nude. Sweeney said while much of men’s nudity work is applauded, her’s goes discredited because while her labor is harder and much more vulnerable, she is one of the actresses who has a smaller pay compared to her males co-stars.

HANNAH HOWE My old high school was right next to a juvenile detention center because of the area it was in. We had officers in every corner and constantly walking around when we had breaks and lunches whether they were ready to stop a fight, take down someone with drugs, or protect us from a school shooter and sadly this was all very common at my school almost daily.

HANNAH HOWE Leen the Engineer on TikTok is a great example of powerlessness. She expresses her oppression through her videos by sharing her stories of how she handles sexism in the workplace because she’s a woman doing a “man’s job”.

HANNAH HOWE Living in Huntington Beach, CA I witnessed white supremacy groups on the balconies of their lavish beach houses on PCH while others were peacefully protesting for the Black Lives Matter movement. They screamed racist slurs, waved signs around, and threatened to cause harm on innocent bystanders.

HANNAH HOWE My example of a bar in my birdcage is a book. This represents the many pages of my life; some may read the entire book while others skim through, maybe hoping to only look at pictures or illustrations. The point is that some judge because they never know the whole story, they're only looking for the entertaining bits and pieces to spread around.

There was lots of controversy surrounding her character because of how young she was and how the director, Michael Bay, sexualized her. In an interview, Fox stated that these that Bay exploited her early in her career as a 15 year old, as she was forced to do things such as wash his car while he filmed her and model revealing outfits in order to “earn” her role in the film.

Low-income communities are more vulnerable to the pandemic due to lack of resources. For instance, some people may be able to miss work to keep themselves and their family healthy, but poorer families can’t afford to miss work. Other communities that have been affected by the pandemic are black communities, latinx communities, and those in the criminal justice system.

Jay Alarcon - In Feburary 2021, the state of Texas was hit with 3 severe cold weather storms that caused an insane power crisis. This was one of the worst infrastructure failures they had going on during this time and in their history. They had long ago separated their state power grid from the rest of the federal system and this trickled down to how the state was able to overcome this crisis. The way this translated into some of the recovery action steps was sectioning areas to shut on and off the power for some amounts of time and marginalized communities faced thee worst conditions from this. The least affected were wealthier communities where they were better equipped to gather provisions. Some companies even profited millions from the disaster meanwhile people actually had died from this.

Often there are a lot of little kids going through it seemingly enjoying it but there are also many who are doing it to involuntarily appease their parents invested in the hobby. There are some who, if they have to do it, at least want some creative autonomy but are ultimately powerless in most cases to the whims of their parents' thoughts about how things “should be” so they ultimately win.

Jay Alarcon - In the world of hair, cosmetology schools (at least across the country that I’ve seen) only teach one way of treating hair, straight. If you have wavy, curly, or coily textured hair you are out of luck for your professional to be certain to have already gotten the basic training without their extra efforts to manage your hair. This cultural norm to completely exclude a movement of natural hair embracing their textures to better treat the health of their hair teaches a lot of what is seen as other, which usually includes the bipoc community. This view of what’s seen as how people look can have many damaging consequences and perpetuates a demand from others who have varied textures of hair to conform instead of them to progress for inclusion.

Between 🤬 culture and the #Metoo movement it’s a systematic violence many are felt like we must all find ways to take extra self care. Changing what one would wear depending on location, company, time of day, going to the bathroom in a buddy system, holding pepper sprays or self defense tools/weapons on walks, usually being more aware of their surroundings in any given room than their male counterpart would consider are all ways where we show the violence continues.

What came to mind when reading about exploitation is the companies of fast fashion. They employ people who are desperate for work and take advantage of them. Most of the time they are also working in bad conditions. They are also extremely underpaid and worked for many hours.

Marginalization can be seen within our communities and schools. Different part of counties and cities are divided up into different incomes. This can affect the eduction system. People in lower income communities won't receive as good of an education as those in higher income communities. The lack of funding has an affect on the education and students.

An example of powerlessness is when gay marriage was being decided by the courts. People in the LGBTQ+ community needed to fight for the basic right to marry. Yet it truly wasn't in their hands. It was left up to the courts to decide. Even then it wasn't until 2015 that it was legalized. A feeling of powerlessness is there when you can't do anything about it. Even after legalization I still feel a sense of powerlessness because it gives off the impression that people in the LGBTQ+ community aren't granted the same rights that "everyone' is given.

The first thing that comes to my mind on cultural imperialism is Halloween. When people dress up as whatever they want. Some people dress up as stereotypes. Others people wear clothing that is specific to others cultures. It not only is incredible rude, it is rendering them as invisible.

People within the LGBTQ+ community have to be careful when showing affection because of violence. There's a story that I remember from a couple years ago. Two women who were a couple were holding hands on a subway. A group of men saw them and harassed them. They then beat them. There are hundreds of stories like this and it is scary.
