The author defines Margery as a good girl despite her situation of being an orphan. The author of this short story is prejudice against women, he believes in men are superior to women hence Tommy, Margery's brother had a better struggle than his sister he even had a pair of shoes when Margery had only one shoe.

The man from London chose Toomy to be the one who went to abroad which further symbolizes that according to the author's perspective women(girls) job was to stay in one area and look after their husbands' house and take of the children. 
Being a women made Margery life worse, since she had to wear one shoe and could not fly abroad with her brother.
