         <description><![CDATA[<div>A fiction text that describes how Maya, a poor girl, is unwelcome by other school mates and the bullying that affects her school attendance. After reading this text aloud, students will engage in a brief discussion as well as the Take A Step activity.<br><br>Discussion Prompts:<br>-"Have you ever been bullied because of something you were wearing? How did that make you feel?          <description><![CDATA[<div>This is a nonfiction text that is suggested by the NYS Common Core, engage NY website. This text would be used to address the universal needs of all children as well as the drastically different ways of life of children all over the world. This is a great opening text for this sub-section of the Poverty Unit.<br><br>Discussion Prompts:<br>"What are the universal needs in which all children should have in order to survive?"<br>"What differences do you see among all of these children? What similarities do you see?"<br>"Is everyone the same or is everyone different?"<br>"Is it okay to be different?          <title>Voices in the Park</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This fiction text tells the same event from four different perspectives - an over-protective mother, a poor man, a lonely boy, and a young curious girl. After reading this text aloud, students will engage in a group discussion regarding multiple perspectives and prejudice present in the text.<br><br>Discussion Prompts:<br>"What was the park experience like for the mother? What was it like for her son?"<br>"Why doesn't the mother like the "scruffy mongrel" chasing and playing with her dog? Why does she make Charles stop playing with the 'rough-looking' girl?"<br>"How was the poor man's experience different? What about the young girl's view of the event?"<br>"Which viewpoint do you agree most with?"<br>"How come these people (apes) can have four completely different ways of viewing the same event?"<br><br>Engagements:<br>Readers Theater - Students will be grouped into groups of four students. Each student will be selected to play the part of one of the characters in the text. Students have to act out how the characters were portrayed in the text and re-enact the story.<br>Group Discussion - Students will join me on the rug to discuss their reaction to the readers theater/role play and how they felt to act like one of the characters.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This text is a celebration of all peoples differences...and similarities! A great text to begin the discussion of different lifestyles and various life circumstances. We would read this together, using some choral reading throughout (e.g. "Whoever you are, wherever you are, all over the world"). Students would engage in a discussion about how we are all different in many ways, yet we all have very real similarities too and that's what matters most.<br><br>Discussion Prompts:<br>"What are things that make you special and different?"<br>"How do our differences make us happy?"<br>"How do our differences make us sad? What can we do when our differences make us sad?"<br><br>Engagement:<br>Students will demonstrate understanding of the concepts of acceptance and intolerance as they write their own short story or poem using Story Bird.</div>]]></description>

         <title>A House for Me - Digital Text</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A digital text about different styles of home, however, it does not include every type of "home" that we've discussed in the previous section. This is a great way to open the discussion of leaving people our and how we oftentimes forget about those people who may not have a home (alienating them from our society).<br><br>Discussion Prompts:<br>"Did you see a home like yours?"<br>"How would you feel if you<br>"Did the author of this digital text leave any types of houses out?"<br><br>Engagements:<br>-Students will draw there home and discuss with a partner if they feel as though the text represented their house well or if they would add/change something about it.<br>-As a group, we will re-write the text to be more inclusive of those who may not have a house - and maybe title it "A Home for Me." Students' drawings will be included in the digital text.</div>]]></description>
