I normally read about either boring or deadly violent things when it comes to war. This story was intriguing because it was one mans thoughts throughout the whole thing. The setting is in present day war in another country and this guy can only think about the girl back home who doesn't love him like he loves her. He talks about what all the other guys carry along with them. It interesting to know all the differences in people and what they think is important to carry with them. This is very important for the story because these guys only have so many places to put things and only so much weight that they can carry with them over long traveling days. On top of that, they MUST carry their guns and ammo and other machinery type of things too. The characterization is important because these guys seem like that don't really know what kind of serious trouble they can be in and then all of a sudden, reality sets in....someone gets shot and then it hits them, they are truly in war and they need to focus on keeping each other alive. Conflict is a big element too. He is conflicted with this girl that he doesn't think loves him even though she writes to him and sends him pictures. He gets consumed in his day dreams about her and then his friend gets shot and dies in his watch. This is another important part because he changes his way of thinking after that. He blamed himself for the friends death and starts to become a strict Lieutenant. He burns the letters and pictures and told himself that he is not going to think of her anymore.

These pictures are neat because it gives us insight as to what he was talking about with his war buddy. He carried these things around with him along with the guns and other stuff. He feels these things will keep him safe during the war.
