Wade Wilson is a mercenary but formerly a Special Forces operative. He met his girlfriend at a bar and after a one night stand it turn into a serious relationship that almost led to a marriage. But he realized that he had cancer after the propose, so to avoid her girlfriend suffer from all the griefs and sadness, he decided to leave his girlfriend. Then, he met Ajax, the evil scientist who then injected a mutation-activating serum into his body and disfigured him by putting him into a slowly-reduced-oxygen chamber. Wade Wilson was furious and wanted to make a revenge on Ajax, so that he started his revenge as Deadpool.

Functional Approach Perspective
This movie is primarily aimed towards audiences of any gender at the age of 16 and above. This is due to the fact that the movie is rated ® and is very explicit. People who easily take offense should refrain from watching this movie because of that reason. If you’re looking to have a good laugh, enjoy sarcasm and witty remarks, this would be the movie for you. The main character, Ryan Reynolds shares the same traits as his role, “Deadpool/Wade Wilson” so his acting is almost natural which adds into the enjoyment whilst watching the movie. Deadpool is suitable to watch whenever you please.

From a Critical/Culture Approach
Deadpool introduces a new kind of superhero. It's filled with many unique fourth-walls broken.

He is a dysfunctional person who is carefree and thinks violence is the only answer to everything. He has regenerative powers and practically can't die. Although he does feel pain inflicted on his body, he doesn't give it a second thought. However what bothers him the most is the heart-breaking feeling inside of him due to him forced to leave his fiancé because of him being diagnosed with cancer.

This movie portrayed Wade Wilson as someone who would do anything to stay alive for his love, even if it results in him being disfigured. It also shows his fiancee as someone who accepts him as who he is when the movie ends with both of them kissing, despite Wade's disfigured face. It also shows how they are meant to be with relatable quotes like " Your crazy matches my crazy".

JaseeDaily
-Jasmine
-Aqilah
-Sabrina
-Ezzat
-Ethan

ZOOTOPIA (2016)

Joyce Lim 0329092

Lim Li Yi 0329254

Eve Cheong 0329427

Joanne Chung 0328579

Ruqayyah 0329120

ZOOTOPIA (2016)

This highly anticipated animated film is brilliantly appealing and attractive to all people of all ages. This film is made due to its specialty and uniqueness because it widely introduces and welcomes us to an exotic planet where all of the anthropomorphic mammals habituated and live like how humans live. Credential to all of the epic cinematography we’ve witnessed in the film, Nathan Warner has wonderfully put every motion picture in place in make the characters stand out and look realistic.

Judy Hopps, the highly enthusiastic little cop bunny, dreams to become Zootopia’s police officer since her early childhood. However, due to Judy’s size and classification as a prey, Chief Bogo despises her and claims she has lack of potential. Nevertheless, Judy never gave up and determines to prove Chief Bogo she is capable of taking the responsibility of taking her duty as a police officer. The extraordinary story of this little bunny continues with the help of a sly cunning fox, Nick Wilde as their mission was to save Zootopia city and prevent animals from going ‘savage’.

Functional Approach Perspective

This movie is certainly suitable and enjoyable for all age groups, surely as an animation it will appeal more to children. As expected, this 2015 animation offers great visuals and cinematography. Both adults and children, and all ages in between will enjoy the humour and storyline portrayed by the characters. On the side, adults might also come to realize the movie brings a more in depth message in disguise. How relatable the animal kingdom in this movie to our own reality will for sure keep the audience thinking and talking. Everyone should give this movie a go even if animation might not be your thing, just to see what the people who brought this movie might be trying to say and how they are doing so. Be sure to witness how the characters and plot unfold in this movie with such wit. It truly is a fun and entertaining movie for the whole family, but it might just leave us with more than a few laughs.

A Critical/Cultural Approach

In Zootopia, there are standards every mammal lives by. For a little bunny named Judy however, it is not the case. The character Judy works hard to defy all stereotypes held against her. However, not all goes as plan when she finally reaches the city where all dreams supposedly come true. Judy is looked down upon by her other colleagues. One of the realistic aspects of the movie was the workplace experience faced by Judy. The Chief Bogo, knowingly pushes Judy away from the sort of work she wishes to do by assigning her to parking duty, which she dutifully executes nonetheless. Chief Bogo also purposely makes Judy feel small because she is considered a prey in the animal kingdom which is seen unsuited for the line of work she has chosen. Judy depicts the importance of standing our ground and not giving up on our dreams or aspirations.

The social setting of the world in this movie can also be surprisingly familiar to our own. Just like the mammals, we are forced to live by certain standards and stereotypes are beginning to define us. The characters in this movie work hard to defy these standards and to fight against the authorities that are pushing these stereotypes forward. Authority holds strong on the defacing of certain mammals in the movie by releasing biased and misleading information on the media to scare the citizens of the city. These discriminations can be paralleled to the issues happening now in real life societies, especially in western societies.

A comedy that explores the dynamics of social status and class within the realm of a high school, inspired by Rosalind Wiseman's non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes that offers a searing critique on high school female cliques and how damaging it could be to a girl's self-esteem.

The movie starred Lindsay Lohan in her prime as well as Lizzy Caplan, Rachel McAdams, Jonathan Bennett, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and also featuring the debut of Amanda Seyfried. Lohan plays Cady, who moves to a new school after returning from Africa with her zoologist parents, and promptly met new friends Janis and Damian. After showing her around, the two warned her to beware of the 'Plastics', a highly popular clique in the school comprising of bratty, spoilt and seemingly perfect-looking members, led by queen bee Regina. The Plastics took an interest to the new girl, and Cady is welcomed to the group... but the friendliness soon descends into chaos and mayhem when Cady falls for Regina's ex-boyfriend whom the jealous Regina stole back, humiliating Cady and sparking of a feud that's going to turn her high school life topsy-turvy!

From a functional approach perspective: This movie will definitely appeal to the teenaged and young adult demographics of 15 to 30, especially among the females. As this is a comedy in a high school setting, one can expect some playground humour and high school shenanigans and other jokes about growing up. One should certainly watch this fun, entertaining movie as it showed Lohan's charms and potential before she spiralled out of control and if one is a fan of Tina Fey's. This movie will also be a good choice if you are planning for an all-girls slumber party! Some people might watch this movie just purely for the entertainment factor while there will be those who will watch this movie for the genre, or for the actors performing in this movie.

From a critical/cultural approach perspective: Mean Girls is an incisive look at the "Girl World" and the meanness, and superficiality of it all within the high-school environment. The movie helps to deconstruct the experience, by using a 16-year-old teenager who has never been to a real school before, is thus, a "clean slate". What is normal to many high schoolers who has lived through the experience shown in the movie, is perceived as strange and abnormal by Lohan's character. It tells us about the desire to be accepted/approved/belong in a group, especially one that is as popular as the "Plastics". The term "Plastics" itself is rather telling - denoting that the group, while flesh and blood, is made up of cold, heartless and emotionless beings who are so consumed with physical looks and social status. This movie is also a commentary on the hegemonical power relationship between the Plastics versus the unpopular crowd - in particular we see how the Plastics are perceived by the rest of the school community and the bulk of the movie saw Cady and her friends try to bring down the Plastics. Last but not the least, another important critique the movie made is related to the concept of self-image and how it is related to the issues of self-esteem, social standing in the high school environment and social acceptance. We see how the Plastics constantly fear losing their popularity and standing, worrying about their self-image despite being beautiful already, proving that they are in fact characters with low self-esteem and plagued with insecurities and lack self-confidence; that their haughty, bitchy persona is a shield that mask these inner flaws of theirs.

Cheong Chun Yin

Chen Hue Sze

Gan Hui Yee

Tan Yi Chen

Chua Jing Yit

A legendary myth of Egypt, related to the God of the Deserts, Set fighting against the whole ancient Egypt for the power of throne, he killed his own brother which is about to put on the crown of the God of Egypt onto his one and only child, God of the Air. Horus, God of the Air lost his eyes during the fight with Set during the ceremony of throne passing. Bek, with the knowledge of stealing, stole one of the eye from the treasures of Set for Horus. With the sacrifice of the love, Bek helped out and took back the throne for Horus and return Egypt a better life.

Functional Approach Perspectives

This movie is suitable for teenagers and adults. The movie consists some violent actions which is not be suitable for audience below age of 18. The content of the movie production is not only for entertainment purposes, it also transmits messages that would likely awake an audience’s mindset. This movie is trying to pass on the history of the past in Egypt, with message telling human to improve their humankind, moral values, and mindset. The movie "Gods of Egypt" is strongly recommended because the plot of the movie is interesting and out of the expectation.

A Critical/Cultural Approach

Gods of Egypt, brings up a historical moment about the Gods, and moral value of the power of love. Bek dreams big, dares to do everything for his loved ones, Zaya. He seeks for the way to bring Zaya back to life with the deal he has dealt with Horus. He then helped out Horus to get his throne back just because, Horus promised to return Zaya from the hell. Trustworthy, Horus and Bek believes in each other to achieve the same goal, which is to defeat Set from destroying Egypt and claimed the whole Egypt as his own world, hurting and putting all citizens in pain. This movie indoctrinated the value of wisdom. With the wisdom and knowledge, God of Wisdom helped Horus, Bek and the God of Love to overcome difficulties when they have to solve a riddle to get into the pyramid and pour the water, retrieved from the ship of The Great Ra into the Desert’s fire, to kill the desert. Horus held to his own responsibility, he knew that Egypt was falling down if it was in Set’s hand, he took everything he has to do just to kill Set and give back Egypt its freedom. This movie conducts betrayal scene which Set betrayed the whole kingdom, he killed his own brother, and even hunted his own wife for the wings that his wife had just so he could fly. He brought a whole troop of armies himself to threaten the kingdom so that people and Gods will bow over his knee. Realistic world created by Set, which only allows people with gold or money to pass through and enter the after-life. People that entered hell after death can only enter after-life if they are wealthy that represents the value of their life and how much do they worth. This brought up message about the realistic world that only allows people that is rich to own the benefits. It is created to differentiate and set up the level among humans, wealth and status.

Group Name:

High Five

Members:

Cheong Chun Yin

Chen Hue Sze

Gan Hui Yee

Tan Yi Chen

Chua Jing Yit

THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985)

On a Saturday morning, five students show up at Shermer High School. Awaiting them is a 9-hour detention. None of them are friends, though they are aware of each other's presence in the school. Each of them come from very different "cliques". They represent the typical stereotypes in American high schools – "the brain, the jock, the princess, the basket case and the criminal." Overseeing the detention is the egotistical Richard Vernon, assistant principal of the high school. They are all assigned a 1000 word essay, entitled: who you think you are. They are warned to not sleep and talk to each other and are left to their own devices. At one point, they begin to listen and reveal their deepest secrets. Despite their differences, they realise deep down they are the same, with fears, hopes and dreams.

FUNCTIONAL APPROACH

This movie's appropriate for ages 13 and above but its main target audience is teenagers. The Breakfast Club is a film, which all teens can relate to and is still relevant to people from the 80s. Each character represents different types of high school cliques and stereotypes such as the jocks, the princesses, the nerds, the basket case and the criminals. The typical stereotypes in high school are still evolving, making the movie a classic - one relatable to every teen. It does not only show you the different stereotypes, but also things they have dealt with in school and at home. The Breakfast Club does not only have drama but also comedic scenes, from leaving witty comments about each other and having most iconic scenes we see in movies these days. Everyone should watch this movie as it has more meaning than what can be grasped at surface level. It is the movie that leaves an impact on teenagers and they could learn a few ethical ideas (?) from the movie itself.

CRITICAL/CULTURAL APPROACH

The Breakfast Club caters to the social estimations of idealism, family and dread. Idealism assumes a noteworthy part in the plot of the film. Each character struggles with the expectations of their parents and what they want for themselves. They swing to extraordinary measures on the off chance that they feel they have not accomplished this flawlessness, regardless of whether it is academic, social or athletic. For instance, Brian tries to commit suicide subsequent to getting an F in a class. Likewise, each character in the film continually stresses over their parents' perspective of them. This stress is reflected by the way each character demonstrate their behaviour and their identity. For instance, Andrew bullied a weaker kid to impress his dad. Along these lines, family inconvenience is a fundamental part of the film's plot. The characters additionally voice their fear of turning into their parents when they become adults and the certainty of this reality. Every one of the characters confronts the dread of dismissal from both their parents and their peers. This is a piece of the reason each character separates him or herself to a predetermined "inner circle" or generalisation. The characters additionally expect that their friendships made inside The Breakfast Club won't proceed outside of the detention period. They expect that the distinctions of their social group are sufficiently great to keep them separated. The generalisations in The Breakfast Club are found in the characters and the social gatherings they are a part of. These generalisations are passed on through the garments they wear and the way they act. The generalisations additionally speak to how the individuals from The Breakfast Club see each other at the start of the film. Before the end of the film, each character's actual identities are uncovered. Through this, it is found that, albeit every stereotype speaks to an alternate social gathering, they are all experiencing indistinguishable issues as youngsters. Every stereotype satisfies each every generalisation somehow, and all in all, they understand their labels can be broken by their own choice and will.

Sincerely,

With Youniverse

+ Hedzlynn Mareesya 0330648

+ Wynonna Sharon 0330307

+ Justin Teoh 0330392

+ Joanna Ong 0330301

+ Nina Yahya 0330515

Tangled (2010)

Synopsis:

Tangled tells us the journey of Rapunzel, a lost princess who was born with magically gifted hair trying to break free from the control of the evil Mother Gothel. Rapunzel then stumbled upon a thief named Flynn Rider who climbed up the high tower where Rapunzel and Mother Gothel lives. From there, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider faced through obstacles together which lead to a romantic relationship. Above all, Rapunzel discovers that there is much more to life than being trapped in a tower. At the same time, she discovers her true self and where she truly belongs to.

Functional Approach Perspective:

Rapunzel is a musical fantasy- comedy film which can be enjoyed by diverse age groups. The children will laugh at the slapstick humor and musical fun while the adults will indulge a surprisingly realistic storyline that will bring them to tears. Audience might want to watch a film like Tangled because of the brand ‘Disney’ itself which brings the meaning of childhood to them whether they are old or young especially as it is a ‘princess’ related movie. Also, there were story books based on Rapunzel that we have read when we were younger so watching this movie will bring a nostalgic experience for the audience and Tangled gives to us a similar story line but with a little twist from the original.

Critical Approach Perspective:

Part of an earlier scene in Tangled showed Mother Gothel took Rapunzel way from her parents when she was a baby without any consent and the song that was sung to Rapunzel by Mother Gothel included the lines ‘’Flowers gleam and glow, let your powers shine.’’ This comes to show that Mother Gothel took Rapunzel away for her own advantage which results in grief for her parents. The song suggests that Rapunzel’s hair had healing powers which was seen and used as an object to Mother Gothel to make her youthful than rather to see Rapunzel as an actual human being with feelings. From here, we can also understand that in a realistic world, humans can sometimes be selfish and very desired to their own needs that they tend to forget how others around them would feel.

Another hidden message can be seen during the film is where Flynn Rider brought Rapunzel to a bar full of thugs who are mean and scary looking people. This made Rapunzel feel terrified and small compared to the thugs. However, after she got to know them better, she felt relieved that the thugs were not as mean as they looked but rather just a soft hearted person on the inside. In this discovery, the saying ‘’ Don’t judge a book by its cover’’ brings a powerful message to the audience. No matter how people look on the outside, we will never truly know them on the inside unless we get to communicate to them of who they truly are from their attitudes, personality and dreams. Looks can be perceiving in this matter.

Other than that, Disney has adopted the stereotype using animation technique in their previous movies and not excluding Tangled that all witches are females. In Tangled, Mother Gothel had dark hair, sharp features and long black curly hair which resembles evil and her attitude was very manipulative and also has told many lies just to keep Rapunzel in the tower.

To conclude, one fascinating message that made our hearts touched was part of the last scenes, where Rapunzel finally met her real biological parents. For 18 years, after Rapunzel was abducted by Mother Gothel, the parents held a ‘flying lantern’ night only on the night of Rapunzel’s birthday to show that wherever Rapunzel was, she would find her way back home again with the guide of the lanterns. This scene told us that with every hardship, comes ease if you put enough effort to the situation and giving up is never an option to get what you want in life.

Done by:

-Barbara 0330382
-Yasmeen 0330794
-Vithma 0330927
-Ze Ming 0330252
-Wen Hou 0330121

Reference Picture:

slum dog millionaire (2008)
Farah Fuad
Adam Eiman
Sharmini
Esther
jacklyn

Functional approach perspectives

Slum dog Millionaire is a heavy film drama involving an 18 year old muslim indian boy named Jamal. The film involves violence, drugs, abuse, and is not recommended for kids under the age of 18. Jamal comes from the slums of India and he joined a game show called “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?”. Jamal is a natural born genius and has gone through a lot in life in the slums of india, which has helped him excel in answering the questions in the game, although he wasn’t educated. Due to this, people were in disbelief and is amazed by Jamal they thought he was cheating his way through because they knew he wasn’t educated. Jamal got into a lot of trouble because he knew the answers to all of the questions so he was stopped by the host of the show and has been asked to drop out but he refused to, and due to that, he was interrogated, tortured and abused by the people in charge.

Cultural Approach

Slum dog Millionaire has portrayed a lot of values such as determination, which Jamal has shown through never giving up despite being accused of being a liar. Another example is bravery and love, Jamal has saved his girlfriend Latika from a prostitute home. Jamal has also showed alertness, observance, and creativity as he used his past experiences in the slums to answer the questions in the game show. However, the way the director portrays the slums of india in the movie was generalized by violence, poverty, drugs, prostitution, which degrades the country to the people who are not educated enough about india.

All in all, despite the negativity, there were lots of values to learn from the movie to enhance our surviving skills, overcoming our challenges, and be more appreciative.
