Mount Fuji is Japans biggest mountain coming in at a whopping 12,388 feet tall. The mountain has become a Japanese symbol and is sacred in Buddhism and Shinto. As an active volcano, it is said to have a strong and powerful spirit. The mountains show stability contrasted to the rest of the work that is in motion. Some interpret the large wave and the sky to be representative of the Daoist Yin and Yang. The dangerous nature of the sea is strongly captured here and shows the lengths fishermen went for their line of work.

This video follows the an artist through the process of creating woodblock prints. It also explains the artists connection to the medium, it was used to create lots of copies for the masses. I chose this mechanism because it really outlines the technique and shows very clearly how exactly it works and the result is achieved.

36 Views of Mount Fuji

This video shows the whole collection of woodblock prints that The Great Wave Off Shore at Kanagawa is from. I chose this mechanism because it is really interesting to see the other pieces from the collection. Not only can we see consistent stylistic choices making the collection appear cohesive, but it also shows multiple different views of mount Fuji. Mount Fuji had a lot of different meanings to different groups and people and it is very clearly shown here.

Yin Yang

Daoism is an ancient belief based in China with the goal of living in harmony with the Tao. Tao is the source of everything that exists. This symbol shows that there is good in bad and bad in good, and how the two are intertwined and complementary. One is not inherently evil. I chose this mechanism because I think it provides a valuable angle to the woodprint. The yin and yang with the wave and the background of the print show the complementary nature of the good natured fishermen and the raging sea.
