1. run down campuses
2. overcrowding 
3. corporal punishment
4. lack of college prep
5. lack of culturally relevant        education

Approximately 22,000 students and teachers participated.

School administrators and police officers gave protesters inconsistent responses; some schools allowed students to walk out, while others barred entrances and exists. This resulted in students being met with police brutality as the walked out and during the protests/marches. 

The prominent figures of the protest were known as the East LA 13. They spoke, presented demands, and led protests. This group was indicted with conspiracy; they faced a total of 66 years combined of prison, however, they charges were struck down two years later. 

Many of the organizers later became distinguished individuals in various fields.
