He has two very loving parents, two older sisters, a younger brother, and two nieces whom he's all very close to, people he knows he can depend on individually. Despite all this, Mark grew up facing many hardships with the people he cared about, mostly struggling with his own anxiety as well as doing his best to help those around him. His panic attacks slowly became less frequent, but something could trigger it at any moment. He's often called "selfless", because he would do anything for the happiness of the people around him, even if it means having to let go of himself. Letting go of himself is when the anxiety comes into play. Through Keimyung, he wants to alleviate his social anxiety and become a more open and social person. Mark chose psychology as his major for the sole reason to be a psychiatrist and make sure everyone gets a taste of happiness, even if it's just for a little while. mark is actual trash for jinyoung. it was basically love at first sight, but of course the other's heart could not be obtained without some hardship.
beginning with mark finding jinyoung sleeping on a tree and falling out, you could say jinyoung fell for mark (buh duh tss). from their mark learned of jinyoung's sleeping habits, his background, and his alter ego.
his alter ego was abusive. mark suffered so many injuries in the battle with it, but pushed through knowing it wasn't jinyoung, it wasn't his jinyoung. 
having to watch jinyoung feel for someone else, having to deal with the heartache and the pressure to stop loving him - mark fell apart. suffered several anxiety attacks and it became all too much to handle. unable to take the pain, mark drinks his spirits away and confesses to jinyoung.
