This picture of an hourglass, represents Mona's coming of age through the events of Two Badges. When the police are first pointed out to Mona when she is young, she doesn't see herself in their position because she "couldn’t even imagine talking to those fearsome men.” But through the events of the book she'll see that she is capable of a lot more than she thought she was.

This picture of a woman hugging herself and along with the quote represent the theme of Self Love. In the quote, Mona is ending her relationship with Frank after shes been abused by him for years. She is able to tell Frank, to his face, that "You're not part of my life anymore, and I got nothing left for you.”

This picture of a man standing on top of a mountain ties back into the theme of Overcoming Adversity that is present in Mona's journey. When Mona joined the police force she was fresh out of her divorce with Frank and was struggling to find a way forward in life. But as she started pursuing her career, she "grew more comfortable and gained experience wearing the badge, I felt, for the first time in my life, that I was where I truly wanted to be."

The Importance of Empathy

This picture of a woman holding hands with a child represents The Importance of Empathy, which is a vital aspect of Mona's story. When Mona is in the gang life, she runs into adults who help guide her through life. Whether that's her parents or Osuna and Brown. When Mona becomes an adult she would always treat the kids involved in gang life "...like people, too. Some were and would always be criminals, but many of them were unsupervised kids looking for mischief."

This picture of different colored birds staying separate represents the discrimination Mona encounters through the events of Two Badges. When she is in the gang world, she has to be more alert than her friends because she is female and that puts her at risk in the male dominated world of gangs. When she goes through the process of becoming a police officer, she is treated harsher than her male counterparts. When Mona didn't learn the "the grid system in a few hours..." her commanding officer "...grumbled something about female cops.”
