Felicia Hemans was born September 25, 1793, to Felicity Dorothea Wagner Browne and George Browne. She was the fifth of seven children. Her and her family lived in the big city until 1800. Financial difficulties led them to move to Gwrych, near Abegele, a small town in North Wales. Her mother tutored her is literature, music, art, Italian, French, and many other languages. Felicia also learned Latin, which helped with the development in her writing career. In 1808, she published her first collection of writings called Poems. Her mother remained as one of her main role models and would be for the rest of her life.

Hemans continued to write over the next few years. She wrote War and Peace (1812) and England and Spain, or, Valour and Patriotism (1808). Unfortunately, these works did not generate enough income for her to remain in Gwrych, forcing her to move to Quebec with her 5 children, who were all under the age of 6. Her husband, Captain Alfred Hemans, left her to seek his own fortune in Italy. Her and her 5 children were left to fend for themselves. This new independence did not cause her to stop writing. In fact, it caused her writing to grow even stronger and more profound. She started writing for newspapers, articles, magazines, and anthologies of poetry. These writings were specifically for women readers. Her most famous lyric was "Casabianca." Some of her writings were often misunderstood and taken very critically. "The Siege of Valencia" is considered to be her most misunderstood long poem. It's about a city besieged and a family held hostage to a murderous chivalry.

During this time of writing for anthologies, many of her works that were geared towards women became very popular. They gained a lot of positive critical attention along with quite a bit of sales. Many of her writings were very supportive of young girls and how they should enjoy their lives of freedom while they still can. She described in her works how once a girl says "I do," their freedom ends immediately. The altar is the ultimate dead end to their freedom. She also had a strong support of children in general. If children had a good moral upbringing, then they would become strong moral adults. Hemans also encouraged children to do more for their families because they were more than capable of doing so. She herself was a child once, and brought her family out of a financial crisis from her first work, Poems.

Felicia Hemans died May 16, 1835 in Dublin Ireland at the age of 41. By the end of the mid 20th century, Hemans was only recognized by a few of her works. "Casabianca" and "The Homes of England" were of her most recognizable works. Although heavily criticized for her views of childhood and feminism, Felicia Hemans is definitely still talked about to this day.
