         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Goal: </strong>Allow students to become more proficient, independent word learners<br><br>- <strong>Making Inferences from Content</strong></div><ul><li> Model how to look for possible clues about meaning of new words by looking within the sentence and then by going back to preceding sentences or forward of a text</li></ul><div><br><strong>- Word analysis</strong></div><ul><li>A Top Ten Word list can be used to introduce important word roots and affixes, gradually building up a list over the school year with many examples of words that include the word parts. </li></ul><div><br><strong>- Dictionaries</strong></div><ul><li>Picture dictionaries should be arranged in thematic sets, rather than alphabetically </li></ul><div><br>- <strong>Instilling a Love of Reading</strong></div><ul><li>Set aside time for independent reading</li><li>Students can choose their own reading material </li><li>Provide a variety of reading material to choose from </li><li>Provide recorded books for students at the beginning level (record them at a slower speed than normal) </li><li>Follow-up activities should focus on the learner’s personal response to the material </li></ul>]]></description>
