Meaning and Origins of Beelzebub

Beelzebub, or Baal-Zebub, was a Philistine god, connected with the illness of the king of Israel, Ahaziah. This name directly translates to “Baal of flies,” or “Lord of the Flies.” He is explained as a controller of the flies, able to bring them and send them away. Flies represent plague, disease and darkness, and it was not unusual to name gods after things such as that. What made Beelzebub such a powerful force was that he had the power to end destruction as well as to bring it. Beelzebub is also known as the “chief of demons,” or “prince of demons.”

Connection to Lord of the Flies

Beelzebub represents plague and destruction, as well as the ability to take it away. He was created as the controller of the flies by the people. In “Lord of the Flies,” Beelzebub was created by them, in a sense - they created the beast and it only lived within themselves. They had the power to bring it into the world, and did, which later led to bringing the horrific events that ensued. The island did end up plagued and destroyed, by their own doing. They had the power to bring the darkness as well as take it away, but only spiraled farther down. As beelzebub became more prominent, and as he created more and more destruction, Simon was finally able to interact with the devil himself. He came in a hallucination/convulsion, one of the scariest ways he could make himself known.

Hey, I really like your background info on Beelzebub, but did you ever consider how he was represented in the part in LOTF with Simon. I think that would have some great insight.

I like the background... I think it fits perfectly with the

theme of the Devil/ Beelzebub. I love all the pictures you guys

put in here, they portray your topic perfectly. I agree with Cailin, however.

I think you should add in more about Simon's interaction in with the Beast.

Maybe add some in about the parachute-man-guy!
