Before starting to comment about your reflection I would like to tell you that I really enjoyed reading you posts.
Regarding the first post on what is reflective practice I think you did a really good job and giving a good perspective to what reflection is and what it is all about. The way that you managed to explain reflective practice is very good and it will also help someone who has never heard about reflective practice learn what it is.
Regarding the second post, I really enjoy how you pin pointed out the important factors of time management and how sometimes somethings that are so small like, taking some time for yourself and focusing on the tasks can be very beneficial.
Finally the third post where you shared you experience, well like I told the others in our group this has to be my favourite out of your posts because it contains your experience that helps me to learn so thank you for sharing. I would also like to say that I really like the way your handled the situation, but unfortunately since being a reliever includes the constant change in ward settings this is not something we have control over.

Nicole, throughout your entries it was very evident that reflective thinking was done, especially through the last entry entitled “reflection on experience” where you used Gibbs Model to reflect on your first week as a staff nurse as a newly qualified staff. I can totally relate to how you felt and in this particular situation due to the fact that I am newly qualified just like you. Sometimes it can be difficult for us both to manage our patients when they are deteriorating especially as a reliever and also the fact that it is not easy to witness someone dying. I guess this experience made you even stronger, it also made you realize the importance of communication both with your fellow colleagues and even with the relatives. I loved reading this experience as it made me think about how I should act If I am faced with a similar situation and even how to communicate with relatives while managing our anxiety and understanding the grief and maybe anger of the relatives.

From your first entry I liked reading about “the role of writing in reflection” where you highlighted the importance of reflection on experience as through reflection, we can rethink the experiences as it makes us better professionals. In your entry you also highlighted how to achieve good quality writing using three keywords being, “find the right words…write using a dialogue…good grammar…voice” this was very beneficial as on could see the main points at a glance.

In your second entry entitled “Finding time for reflection” I really liked the idea that you made a reference to steps one should follow so that one can find time to reflect. In this entry you also mentioned barriers and good things that might help when finding time for reflection. This made me realize that finding time for oneself to reflect and think in today’s word can be underestimated and easily ignored. I liked that you pointed out that the individual’s state of mind can affect both negatively and positively the reflection

Although your entries were not that long, I can say that you managed to express accurately the assigned concepts, you also referred to various references in your entries. I like the fact that you included pictures and quotes further expressed yourself thus highlighting your main points thus supporting your work. I also liked the fact that you also included a video to further explain reflective writing and techniques on reflective process, while you manage to use different colors to highlight important titles and headings.

Dear Nicole, you can see progress from your first reflection to your third reflection. You used good referencing with additional resources searched.

After reflecting on a situation, coming up with an action plan on how you deal with similar situations in the future and how to make general changes that are deemed appropriate in such situations will be very beneficial for your practice. One of the questions you can ask is "If I had to do the same thing again, what would I do differently".

The use of colour and images supports your arguments and are used with thought. Keep up the excellent work :)

To begin with, I wish for you great success and for both of us to graduate together!

I must give you a thumbs up on how all your reflections are clearly expressed and easily understood, and applicable to the reflective practice given. I love how colourful your journal is, which will attract more readers! Although, in my opinion, I would choose colours which are more delicate to the eyes since it is, after all, an e-journal.

While reading your first reflection, The Role of Writing in Reflection, I agree with you when you said that journal writing aids in bringing out a more profound significance from a particular experience. Also, I concur with you that the writing process is a straightforward procedure in which it can be achieved by practice. I like how you chose to emphasise the quotes with colours, italics and spacing between the paragraphs. It is an exciting idea that you inputted a video which explains how to write reflectively.

For the second reflection, Finding time for reflection, I agree with you on how it can be challenging to achieve proper time management. The steps that you mentioned are quite straightforward and easy to follow.

The last reflection, Reflecting on experience, I used the Gibbs cycle as well, which is quite easy to follow. I enjoyed reading your experience as I undergone a similar situation. What would your action plan be? I would suggest attending conferences which are about death and dying as would help with understanding more if a situation like this arises. Furthermore, In the paragraph Evaluation and Analysis, you could substantiate by adding further literature search.

In conclusion, maintain the great job, anticipating to read additional reflections from you! :D

-Kathleen Mercieca

great job on your reflective entries! Throughout your entries it was evident that reflective thinking was done, especially through the sixth entry entitled “Reflecting on experience” where you used Johns’ model to reflection. I liked the fact that you changed to a different model of reflection although in your previous reflections you said that Gibbs model is your go-to model. I can totally relate how you felt, I can point out that personally when I am faced with a particular issue regarding a medication that was not signed I always ask the in charge, to check if they know that if it was given or not. To add to this I would like to add that in the ward that I am assigned to at my workplace we also use the same system of colour coding the am and pm doses time, personally I like this system however you pointed out a fault in this system this being that both the 6am and the 8am doses were being highlighted in pink when in fact these should be highlighted using a different colour. You made me realize the importance of always checking the treatment time as by using highlighters it can be misleading.

From your fourth entry I liked reading about “The role of art in reflection” I appreciate that you were humble enough to say that you felt ‘blocked’ when you attempted your initial reflection writing. And as you clearly stated “Art is a mode of…expression..art enables suppressed feelings to come to life”. ‘not every individual is able to express the reflection through writing’ That is why different individuals reflect using various tools. I also liked the fact that you highlighted that the use of different dark and bright colours can facilitate the expression of mood and emotions.

In your fifth entry entitled “The use of an ePortfolio?” You mentioned that at first you found Mahara quite challenging but from what I can see is that you have managed to grasp well its concepts despite the technical skills. I particularly liked how you described tips on how to maintain an e-portfolio; and I agree with you when you said that the entries should be kept grammatically correct.

After reading your last three entries, I can finally conclude that you expressed yourself very well and you managed to reflect using great reflecting thinking. I liked the fact that you used pictures and quotes in your entries as this make it easier to grasp the main concepts you wanted to deliver. You also made use of references through your reflective entries these entries supported well your work. What I really enjoyed throughout your six entries is the use of different colours and fonts as these made it easier for the reader to concentrate.
Keep it up!, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2020!

Again, really enjoyed reading your entries very interesting and fun to read.
While reading your entry regarding Art and Reflection which I simply enjoyed, I noticed that you pointed out some very important facts such as the use of colour and how different colours usually resemble different emotions. You also stated that reflection is a process in itself and that it can be helped with the use of art and I can say that I totally agree with you and I also think that when a individual uses art to reflect there is a better chance of remembering the outcomes. I also like how you pointed out the fact of media and how it is also a type of art, as although it can be forgotten but with the change that is being brought upon us with time media can play a big role in reflection.
Regarding your 5th entry with the importance of a e-portfolio I enjoyed reading about the benefits that an e-portfolio has and and also reflect on how many of those mentioned benefits I as a user of an e-portfolio have benefited from.
Finally, when I was reading the entry with you sharing your experience, I can totally understand what happened to you and it can happen to the best of us, unfortunately we are always in such a rush during our job that sometimes we tend to take certain things for granted. I think that the most important thing is that you realised and you have learned from you experience.
Lastly I would like to wish a great future in the rest of your career and hope you have a great festive season.

Great work on all of your reflective writings which were both enthralling and remarkable.

I must say that all your reflections are enjoyable and delightful to read. All your reflections were intelligible, distinct and relevant to the reflective practice given. I enjoyed the way you used the pictures which were all relevant to the reflective practice and how colourful your journal is, which attracts more the eye.

While reading through ‘The role of art in reflection’ the fourth reflective, the quote that you found explained exactly what is an art which I also agree upon. I complied with you when you said art in health care could be used to improve both the health and well-being of patients and also of health care professionals and this was substantiated by quoting Florence Nightingale. Also, I agree with you when you stated that writing your feelings is not an easy task. Another statement which I agree upon is that art is individualised, and it gives individuals power to be free. Lastly, I agree with you that when reflecting on a particular emotion, it able to recapture and reminisce on the feelings in that particular situation which it can help you when looking back on that particular experience.

The fifth reflective ‘The use of an e-portfolio’, I agree with you, an e-portfolio can help you to keep a track record of the individual’s growth and effort. The benefits that mentioned are excellent on why we should use an e-portfolio. As you stated about Mahara how you found it very convenient, useful and can a bit challenging at first in which I agree with you. The tips that you suggested are quite interesting such as it is unique, easy to browse and grammatically correct.

‘Reflecting on experience’ the sixth reflection in which you shared a personal experience which was quite emotional and intriguing. Also, you chose a different model the Johns’ model, which is not my own preference, but it is a good and structured model. I agree with you, being a reliever is difficult, but we can learn from our own mistakes. You made a mistake, and you admitted that you did it that is the first right thing you did then followed the standard procedure. Do not feel ashamed of making a mistake but learn from it like you stated it is a life lesson. Another part which I agree with you is that you learned from this mistake and made sure that it will not happen again. You can keep in mind from a nurse to another nurse that we are human beings that mistakes tend to happen and we all try to avoid them as much as possible because as you said sometimes, they can be fatal.

Well done, Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and all your family!!

Well done on your reflective writings. Your portfolio is very well structured and colourful. I would focus more on the quality of references used in your reflection, this will enhance your learning. Also, your action plan has improved from the previous entries. I would further add more detail to this and try to think of several perspectives on how you can implement your plan. Very good writing skills. Keep up the good work.
