         <description><![CDATA[<div>raskolnikov goes along with marmeladov, following him back to the family's apartment. katerina, marmeladov's wife,&nbsp;becomes enraged upon seeing them. she takes her husband, drags him across the floor by his ear, and yells at him. she is so loud that neighbors come over to watch the spectacle. raskolnikov, feeling out of place, leaves. on his way out he places a bit of money on a table. but once he is outside, he immediately regrets doing so, because he already didn't have much money.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>after his reminiscing, he continues on. however, it's not long before he falls into another recollection. this time, the memory is much more recent. it takes place at a bar, raskolnikov sitting near two officers. he had just come back from pawning one of his belongings off to a mean old woman named alonya ivanova. the two men sitting near him mention her name, and he begins to listen in on their conversation. the two are insulting her, calling her a stinge. raskolnikov, already having an unfavorable impression of the woman, silently agrees with their sentiments. in fact he agrees with most of what they say. this makes their suggestion much worse. they 'jokingly' proposition murdering the woman.&nbsp; jokingly, of course, as they are police. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>this suggestion, no matter how insincere, makes raskolnikov recoil. the officers leave, as does he, and he walks and tries to brush it off, but the idea keeps coming back. compared to an ordinary person, he must have seemed absurd. to be so bothered, yet unable to make the thought leave him, one would think he was quite evil. however, the truth was the opposite. it was his crushing morality that led to this never-ending notion. while reminding himself that he would never do it, he ended up thinking about it more. while trying to forget it, he ended up thinking about it more. while thinking about it more, he ended up planning out the entire crime in his head. the notion of it haunted him, and with no one to confide in, it slowly began to take over his mind. he was no longer able to forget it, or ignore it, or brush it off. it was now part of him.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>on his walk, raskolnikov sees a young girl stumbling down the road. he himself is weary and wants to sit down on the bench, but the girl reaches it first. she is dressed messily and completely debauched. raskolnikov compares her to sonya. he sees a gentleman hanging about nearby. raskolnikov immediately knows that he has ulterior motives for his doing so. the man is plump and greasy, likened to a pig. he waits around for raskolnikov to leave the girl unattended.  raskolnikov quickly calls out his behavior, and they begin to fight. an officer is nearby and goes to see what the trouble is about. upon his entrance, raskolnikov rushes towards him. he explains the situation and gives the policeman money to fetch a cab for the poor girl. --- </div>]]></description>
