I have used this twice with a high level of success. Candidates feel a "need to know" while in class. They successfully apply the standards to their practice. The math fair also models collaboration and community involvement. Method: The Project Approach (Katz & Chard)

I used The Project Approach for the entire course. We worked our way through the five features and three phases with teacher candidate investigations and presentations as the final exam. The shared experiences throughout the course included the textbook reading with quizzes and my presentations "covering" topics that candidates had not selected. I expect my presentations to vary each time the course is taught. I am most proud of the following comment, "We built relationships as we learned."
