This shows that Henry, along with everyone else fighting, had to grow from a boy to a man in a short amount of time and get the job done to serve in the war.

This shows that he did not care as much about himself and cared more about serving the Union and doing whatever he had to do and put full effort in.

Dramatic Irony - Henry has hindsight of what he could have done in the past. As the reader we know this before the character even realizes it.

Foreshadowing - Henry constantly worries about going into battle and doesn’t know what he will do. The foreshadowing comes in when he begins to run and we don’t know what move he’ll make but can assume that he is going to fight.

Symbolism - Henry wants a “red badge of courage” to symbolize his hard work and being wounded in war.
