There is a link between behavior and emotional problems with the pressure to achieve academically. Some students do well with a certain amount of pressure but they need to feel this comes from a place of caring rather than just focusing on achievement.

Parental involvement is negative when students define it as "homework help". 
Positive parental involvement for High School students means communicating with their child's teachers, attending school functions and having a supportive relationship. 
Unrealistic academic expectations leads to a negative impact. There is pressure on schools to increase the number of students accepted to prestigious universities, so they are increasing the number of AP/Ib courses offered and encouraging students to participate in many extracurricular activities. A tremendous amount of money is being spent on ACT/SAT preparation.

How can students manage stress?  Yoga, meditation, working out, listening to music.  Some students cope with this pressure by turning to alcohol and marijuana. Three themes that emerged to help deal with stress (Leonard, 2015) are "sports and exercise, preventative activities such as good planning skills, and maintaining a balanced perspective on school and grades."
Schools need to educate parents about having realistic expectations.Schools should monitor the amount of challenging courses students take.  Schools could modify schedules and stagger exams. Homework should be meaningful and beneficial.
