SOMETHING NEW

Something new I learned about my heritage is the meaning of the national anthem. I did not know that the national anthem was written to talk about Mexicans when it is time for war. I discovered that it was written by Francisco Gonzalez Bocanegra. It was written in 1854. Although it was written in 1854 it wasn't published until 1943. A fact that I didn't know about the national anthem is that a contest was held to see who could write the best national anthem. The contest called for poets to participate. The author was a poet and at first he was not going to do it , but he did eventually. One of the lyrics talks about how the earth trembled when canons sound. Another lyric also states that Mexicans will the steel ready when war comes. I also learned about the certain reason it was written. It was written after the defeat in the Mexican- American war. After the defeat, Mexico felt divided and diverse. With the national anthem though, all of that was disregarded. The most important thing i learned about the national anthem is that the national anthem is described as a symbol o, " Mexican Identity." That means that the national anthem of Mexico represents all that Mexico has fought for and what it stands for.

In Mexico, Christmas is a very religious holiday that is celebrated from December 12 to January 6. Kids often do posadas. There are 9 posadas that represent the time when Joseph and the Virgin Mary were looking for somewhere to stay. Kids will go around to houses singing a song about Mary and Joseph asking for a room and they are all told that there is no room available. Once the posada is found a baby Jesus will then be given to the house and then after, everybody will go to a midnight mass. After the mass there are fireworks that will be set off and parties will be held to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
