This poem attempt to give a voice to a historical figure, but she may have already had one.

Honorée Fanonne Jeffers talks a lot in her poem about "an unkind contrast" (Honorée Fanonne Jeffers 9) between Dido and the girl next to her. Pointing out what she thought Dido would want to say to the world regarding the idea of racism. The poem suggests that as a black person, Dido would have a disadvantage while she was alive. Yet what the poem doesn't point out, is the fact that she was accepted by the British and would've had enough money to make a change in the world.

Honorée Fanonne Jeffers is also an American poet and would have had a different point of view than Dido would. By giving Dido a voice that she thought Dido needed. Therefore, what the poem explains could not have been her actual view of her situation.

In the poem, the poem specifically mentions the dog as "...an Alsatian shepherd dog tied to your handlebars", and in the drawing the dog is drawn directly in the front middle, the "prime location" of the drawing. At that time, after some further research, I found out that dogs in medieval times were an important symbol of "courtly majestic and pure love", which is very important in the drawing.

From the poem "Edward Hopper and the House by the Railroad", we can interpret that the house, abandoned, isolated, and vacant, symbolises the harsh conditions during the revolution of America. People, just like the house, were abandoned from society, lonely and filled with melancholy. Personification, which is widely used in this poem, gives readers an uneasy feeling about the house. "The house is ashamed of itself." is an example of this, causing readers to wonder about what the house has done. Imagery is also widely used in this poem. For example, "Straightening into the distance. No trains pass." This causes the readers to feel as if life is removed from that area, and as if the whole earth has abandoned that area. The poem is generally ambiguous, as there are many unanswered questions and wonders through the process of reading the poem.
Overall, this poem expresses a strong feeling of isolation and depression, reacting to the harsh era of the Americans.
-Mira

This poem focuses on how Elizabeth is trying to protect Dido. In the house, Dido is treated with care and love, but in the outside world, she won't be treated that nicely because of her race and her skin color. Elizabeth wants to prevent all of those and keep her in the walls, where people are nice to her and she won't have to face the mean comments. In the poem, it talks about triangles and seas, which is basically the triangular trade and slaves. The last part of the poem, which Elizabeth begs "Behave, cousin. Don't run away from me" Probably means that Dido has been kept in the same place for too long, and wants to go out to the real world, but Elizabeth wants to prevent her from going out and facing all the mean and hateful comments.

Elizabeth knows about the slave trade and knows that if Dido leave she'll be mistreated because of her race. I think she's trying to protect Dido by keeping her in within the walls, making her believe that nothing is wrong outside those walls.
