It's almost as large as Moscow and really ancient(it was built on the 27th of June by Peter the 1st in 1703). There're a lot of museums, theatres and other cultural centres, so this town is visited by millions of tourists every year. The largest museum of this town is Hermitage, where you can join the excurcion  in any language. I like impressionism collection in this museum. Boys will, probably, like the Knight Hall there(a part of its collection is in Vyborg now) From the museums you  also can see the Russian museum. but we also have  many science and historical museums, such as Railroad museum at Varshavskiy railway station or at Sadovaya street, Water museum, Zoological museum as the part of Cunstcamera. 
What about the theatres, I'd recommend you the Mariinskiy one, because there you can see operas and ballets about many famous tales(for example, ''Opera about tsar Soltan''), althought the tickets to this theatre are really expensive now.
We also have a lot of cinemas, and it's good, that you can watch Shakespeare's plays and others in original language with Russian subtitres there.
