The grey wolf

The other name of the Basilicata region is “Lucania” from Latin “the country of the wolves”. In particular the grey wolf is the symbol of the local national park of Pollino. Originally it lived in North America and in Eurasia, but now is in Europe, Mexico and USA. A typical female wolf weighs about 43-44 kilograms, whereas the male weighs 35-38 kilograms. The female’s fur is grey, long and bushy. It has short ears , a long tail, a slender body, a muscled neck and its teeth are big and sharp. Sadly now the grey wolf is at risk because a lot of specimes were killed by humans during a period called the “wolf hunt”. Luckily now the wolf hunt is illegal and the wolf is a protected species.

The Loricato pine

The Loricato pine is the symbol of the Pollino National Park. Its name means "white skin" for its characteristic silvery white color that the dry trunk assumes. The name "loricato" is due to the bark that in the ultra-centenary specimens recalls the armor of the Roman warriors (the lorica). In Europe it is present only in the Balkans, while in Italy it grows exclusively in the Pollino area. The Loricato pine can live until 1000 years. The environmental conditions, which are prohibitive for other plants, make the pine assume the strangest forms, with the branches that are arranged like a flag to withstand strong winds.

The white fir

The white fir (Abies Alba) is a species of fir diffused in the Pollino forest. It grows in the mountain areas, at altitudes between 500 and 2100 m, finding its ideal climax in areas with medium-high rainfall and atmospheric humidity between 900 and 1800 m .The white fir is a majestic, slender and long-lived tree. The white fir is an evergreen and monoecious tree (that has distinct and separate male and female flowers on the same plant). It can grow up to a height of 60 meters. The bark, in the young specimens, is smooth and is silvery-white gray and presents small resinous pockets. However, in older plants (over fifty years of age), the bark thickens, tending to peel off in thin plaques and becomes, starting from the base, wrinkled, cracked and blackish. The wood of this plant is also used in medicine: the buds, which are harvested in spring, contain an oil and a glucoside, called piceina, which makes them balsamic, with inflammatory, antirheumatic and diuretic properties.
