Students are challenged to create an event that promotes Grade 7-12 involvement. Students brainstorm, then vote on ideas and form teams. They create an event proposal for approval by teacher(s) and administration. They then work to make the event a reality within the school. This follows an outline of business expectations that are amended with students for assessment.
An example from last year: one team saw a need for more equipment for Physical Education. They ran a whole school inclusive dodgeball tournament as a fundraiser. They then worked with the PE Department head to follow up the process
BTT1O1

My plan this year is to brainstorm/collaborate with the students the topics we will focus on this year as well as potential assignments and projects. I would really like to do a community based project this year but it is really important to have student voice so that they feel engaged in the project.

Allow students to choose a topic of interest when researching and give them free reign to determine format that is appropriate for them to display their knowledge. Obviously some framework is required, ie. within the overall curriculum expectations. Choice is difficult for essential learners, and may require significant time and loose guidance. Individual / group work was also a choice.
As noted by my wise colleague, assessment standards become problematic. Personally I think a standardized approach to assessment in this sort of free choice environment is counter productive.

Students are tasked with the challenge of analyzing a teen issue which could cause struggles in education, home, social, work life balance. To build upon this issue, students are to generate two positive alternatives to substance consumption to cope with the stressors they speak of. Students enjoy the opportunity to research topics that are pertinent to their life in some way. The second phase allows for a secondary tier of critical thinking on how to cope with stresses that teens face everyday
