The name Dianthus is made up of two Greek words "god" (Zeus) + "anthos" referring to flower = the flowers of God.
In Roman times there were wreaths made from carnations and their perfume.
Religious paintings associated this flower to the tears that Mary shed when she saw Jesus on the cross and they were transformed into carnations when they fell to the ground.
