Its flagship website www.housingcare.org.uk provides free information and guidance for older people, relatives and carers, and professionals. It includes specialist directories of 40,000+ retirement housing developments and care homes in the UK, with nearly 3,000 available properties updated weekly. A Directory of Home Services provides information to help older people live safely and independently at home. 

Erosh members are highlighted on the website which demonstrates your commitment to best practice and continuous improvement and enables you to showcase your schemes and services. If you haven’t already done so, please contact EAC to make sure information about your schemes is up to date so the site is as useful as possible to older people.

There are new ways of accessing information as well as ‘data driven’ devices predicting our behaviour and needs. The technology used in housing and care is however relatively traditional and based on analogue telephone lines with stand-alone devices connected to dedicated monitoring systems. Over the next few years, the UK’s telecommunications infrastructure is being upgraded to digital connectivity. Sheltered & retirement housing providers must prepare to minimise disruption, ensure service continuity, and avoid compromising the safety of vulnerable service users; as well as to maximise the opportunities digitisation offers.

Our new briefing, coming soon, will help you understand what the ‘digital switch’ means for you and to prepare. The new SiT Lite is more basic and simply provides you with a template to input the things you do to contribute to the achievement of relevant health, social care, and public health indicators. It also lets you input your costs, local or national costs you want to compare you costs with, and produces a handy graph showing the total costs savings yours services can make. This continues to impact on their expectations of housing, support and care as they age, and their anxiety about facing further discrimination” and “many of their peer age group are still homophobic”. Many older LGBT people struggle to find LGBT-friendly accommodation. Specialist schemes are rare, schemes are often not advertised as ‘LGBT-friendly’ even when they are. Erosh members have reported discrimination experienced by LGBT people when they move into sheltered & retirement housing to the extent that sometimes they 'go back into the closet'.

Our new guide will focus on improving your understanding of the needs and concerns of older LGBT people so you can provide more effective support, help overcome discrimination and homophobia, and actively promote your schemes and services as LGBT-friendly. It will cover:

  • Key definitions 
  • Links with legal, regulatory, and policy frameworks
  • Housing and support needs of older LGBT people
  • How you can support older LGBT people
  • What older LGBT people experiencing discrimination/homophobia can do
  • Good practice examples and sources of information and advice
