The ghosts represent Isla's internal thoughts pleading for her mothers attention saying "Can you help me? Can you see me? Don't leave me here." It reflects back on her neglectful mother who refuses to act as a mother figure towards her Children. It also represents Isla begging not to be left on the island of stone to be taken to a safer place.

The tone in the chapter is an intense and scared tone. This developed through the repitition of the words ""blood, run, darkness and down". The reptition of darkness is a refelction of how she is scared of the darkness. This is a constant theme of the book. "there were steps down into darkness.... On the other side light". Shows that she feels happier when she is out in the open This creates the sense that she doesn't want to be there. Whilst when she is on the Nella Dan she is happier as to her it is full of light. There is this scary haunting imagery. This is the "blood stained steps". They were aged by time and had experienced more than she has
