The Charter was created in 1982, which ensures that everyone in Canada is guaranteed certain rights and freedoms. This ensures that everyone is treated with equality, especially in regards to men and women having equal rights and individuals being able to speak freely without consequence. The Canadian Charter includes fundamental freedoms, democratic rights, mobility rights and equality rights. "The charter guarantees such rights as the right to equality, democracy, and mobility. The freedoms include those of conscience, religion, and peaceful assembly." (Norman-Eady, 1998). If the charter is breached at any time, the individual may appeal.

Resource
- Norman-Eady, S. (1998, January 28). OLR research report .
The Freedom of Religion

Having the freedom of religion in Canada allows all Canadians to practice whatever religion they desire without judgement or consequence. This ensures that people of different cultures, religions and beliefs can practice their religion as needed/wanted. A freedom like this allows individuals to be treated with the same respect and equality and someone who does not share the same beliefs, this is especially important in a court of law. The law states that this will only be used if the individual has shown that they are very passionate and involved with the religion or belief, the importance must be shown. "will only be triggered where the claimant shows that he or she has a sincere practice or belief that has a nexus with religion" (Government of Canada, section 2a).

Resource
- Department of Justice, section 2a (n.d.). This comes from the credible source of the government of Canada.

This video is related to the topic of the Canadian charter because it comes from a credible Canadian government site and it is accessible to all Canadians.
Freedom of Conscience

The freedom of conscience is linked to the freedom of religion as it allows individuals to not be apart of a religion, but to also have their own views and morals that are to be considered and respected. People around Canada have different opinions and beliefs of what is right and wrong and this freedom allows for it to be respected and expressed without consequence. This plays a major role in Canada being a 'free' country. Another major portion under the freedom of religion is the schools rights and privileges, in regards to religious schools. "Freedom of religion is subject to such limitations as are necessary to protect public safety, order, health or morals and the fundamental rights and freedoms of others." (Government of Canada, section 2a).

Resource
- Department of Justice, section 2a (n.d.). In Government of Canada . It puts the information into a different context and explains it in a clear way that is accessible to all Canadians.

This video is relevant to the topic "freedom of religion" because it talks about the sides to the charter that most people don't notice and are more 'hidden' in the larger sections of the charter, such as the freedom of conscience. This video allows people to know their freedoms and rights and it ensures that all freedoms and rights in Canada are expressed and heard.

SCC: Law Society of British Columbia v. Trinity Western University and Trinity Western University v. Law Society of Upper Canada (case)

This case is about how the freedom of religion was compromised between a law school and a University. A christian University wants to open a law school, but is saying that all students must be abstinent and not partake in any sexual acts before marriage. this includes within the school and during free time. The students wanted this case to be revised because they felt that their freedom of religion was compromised . It was said that they should be abled to continue a law degree without any regards to their personal/religious lifestyle outside of school. It was very controversial as many different people on the case/jury had different perspectives and opinions on the matter. This may have infringed on a few other freedoms and rights as well and discriminates against people of a different sexuality, as they stated that sexual relations may only occur between married man and woman. "prohibits sexual intimacy except within marriage between a man and a woman." (SCC, 2018).

Resource
- Case in Brief, Law Society of British Columbia v. This case shows how conflicts can occur within the charter and how it can be handled. This link shows a case between a school and opening a religious law school. How does it infringe on our rights and freedoms to restrict personal lives?
