This book is about the working poor in America. I chose this book because the mother of Robert Peace who is the main character of our book club choice struggles with working a job that can sustain a living. Poverty plays a role in the book and the choices they make to succeed. The obstacles in Jackie's life reach high points but the love she has for her son gives her hope and encouragement and keeps her motivated in the tough times. This is another connection between the two books.
A comment that stood out to me in the book that the author made was as follows.
"Being poor, living in poverty, seemed like probation, the crime being a lack of means to survive.
I would use turn and talk during and after as my reading strategy for this book. I would have students keep notes and share their ideas and observations at end of class .

This book is about the juvenile criminal system in Los Angeles. The book discusses the failings and inability of the juvenile system to rehabilitate. The author investigates the juvenile system and how it works. This books connection with the book in our book club choice is where being incarcerated affects individuals at a young age and can impact their decisions for the future.
The reading strategy I would use with this book would be multi-column notes and exit slips. The multi-column notes would help the student reflect on the author and the findings of his investigation.
The exit slips would be used to provide ideas on strategies the students thought could be used to improve the juvenile system.
