Her husband is a delivery driver. Together they make just enough money to pay their bills and splurge on one nice gift for each other each year. This year Joni got an iPhone that she loaded up with health apps. She keeps track of her daily activity with the step tracker, monitors her heart rate, and records the foods she eats and the calories she takes in.

Joni has not felt well for a few years. Off and on she’s had a skin rash, headaches, and fatigue. 

During this time she went to 5 different doctors. Each doctor had a different medical specialty: She saw a doctor who specializes in skin issues; an ear, nose, and throat specialist, a doctor who specializes in natural remedies, a dietitian, and two different general practitioners. Each doctor treated her symptoms differently. Each prescribed different medicine. And none of the doctor’s were aware of the treatment she was receiving from the other doctors. There is not one database or one universal system where her medical records are kept. 

Joni is very frustrated because she is now burdened with lots of doctor bills that she can’t afford to pay, and she doesn’t feel better.
