Well-known carnival customs in the Kvarner area include the procession of Zvončari (bell ringers) of Kastav near Rijeka. Dressed in sheepskins and hidden behind animal masks, they roam the streets to welcome the spring and exorcise evil spirits. The Zvončari wear white trousers, blue and white t-shirts, a sheep skin, a red bandana and bells. Since 2009, this tradition has been included on UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The city of Pag on the northern Dalmatian island of the same name is the center of the carnival called "Robinja" (female slave). Pag's Robinja is a singing performance consisting of a dance with wooden axes accompanied by verse. The female slave character is played by a man dressed as a woman wearing a kerchief and accompanied by two boys. After all participants have formed an ellipse in front of the parish priest's house, a distinguished citizen's house or on the main square, the performance starts. The simple plot is based on selling the female slave. The opposing sides argue and retell past events. At the climax of the performance, the ellipse starts shrinking and the female slave escapes.

During the carnival days, the town streets are filled with complete carefree joy, thousands of masks conceal laughter and merry songs. On the other hand, not everything is so carefree - uncertainty goes on until the Fašnik, or rather the Prince of the Carnival, is put to trial, which is the central event of the carnival. In the main town square, a performance is staged where Fašnik, guilty of all things bad that happened in the last year, is tied. All the anger, sorrow and misery is vented upon him, and then on Shrove Thursday he is burned in a spectacular ceremony, the ancient belief being that this rids us of everything negative in the coming year. Once the Fašnik has been punished, a riotous celebration begins which should set the tone for the whole coming year
