Struggles with Collaboration

Today a major struggle that I have experienced is with one coworker contradicting some of the expectations during with the activities students are doing. With me being the lead staff it is hard to not be bossy when collaborating with the counselors. I try to allow them to put their input on the situations and we collaborate on everything. I feel like I struggle putting my foot down when it comes to important situations. Most times we are really good on allowing each others ideas to be in the end situation we are working towards. Something else that is difficult is how to approach the situation when something is needing to be accessed. At the end of the day I have asked for assistance from my directors on how to approach the situations. When things settle after I get home I often feel like the situation may not be as big as I may have thought.

Discipline in the classroom

Something that I have had difficulty with throughout the last couple of weeks is discipline with children. I struggle when is enough, enough. I say this because I am a teacher that feels if the issue can be addressed and changed in the classroom it should. I have recently been facing problems with a student who is very technical and logical in rules and guidelines. However, if the expectations I am giving to everyone are not followed I address it with them. When I ask them why they aren't doing it and ask them to at least try on the activity. When the time is over and the next activity is fun they try to go to that. When I tell them they can not because they have not done the whole group activity they start to lash out. I explained to the student that because they did not finish the previous activity and not attempt it they can not do the next activity. The student then tries to explain it is not fair to themself or the class that I ask them to do the activity. I have had to learn that it is time to give up and walk away and just address it with parents. However, it becomes tiresome when it is the same behavior everyday and nothing seems to change.

Over this past week I have been noticing some good and bad changes with students. I try to create heterogeneous groups because I have students ranging from pre-k through 5th grade and many of my students are siblings. At the start of the year I noticed that a lot of my sibling groups often stayed together and now that we have them all spread out and my bigs are mixed with some littles they have all become more open and independent. Recently I have found quite a bit of bickering within the littles themselves as well as the bigs fighting the bigs. I try to move them all where I think they may meet new people they might not really gravitate toward. At the start of program I moved them to their new seating. However shortly after I realized there were some adjustments to be made. I realized the students I moved to the front quickly agitated due to their personalities clashing because even though they are quite far apart in grade their personalities were the exact same. So, after those moves were made I noticed a little bit of change is good.

Something that had started earlier this semester was one of our workers decided to become an emergency pick up person on one of our students pick up list. She had decided to do this because she lives in Clyde (where we work) and the mother struggle to pick up her daughter on time due to work. This decision was made between the two of them. The office and directors did not say anything at the time this was being done. Recently they said they were not aware of the conditions but, due to them finding out over 2 month later they let the conditions stay. However, personally I have found that this is difficult when it comes down to the behavior of the child. It is hard due to mom not ever picking up the child and the staff is always taking the child. When I have problems with behavior I have to contact mom either through a note, or a call. Often it is hard to express the concern and then the staff is having the parent sign the note rather than me and often information can be expressed different due to the staff not viewing the behavior that is being addressed. For me I think contacting the parent when the behavior is difficult is key at the time it is occurring. When the behavior is severe and the parent needs to be involved informing them that they will need to be picked up by them to allow for a more serious conversation to happen.

Today was the most overwhelming day with discipline within my kids this semester. I have two other staff but throughout the situations I felt completely alone and stressed. I don't often feel overwhelmed because I know how to handle situations but it was the part where everyone needs me in some form or another. In our gym one of our students had an outburst where he punched a wall and the staff who saw called the mom incase the child became more overwhelmed. Due to the severity we needed to do a parent communication in case the behavior became more severe. During snack we had a child punch another child with the other child's hand during a "game". This behavior also resulted in a note home. During craft we had another student have outburst due to not getting what they wanted and because I was the one saying no this became a push and pull conversation. During this conversation with the student parents were coming and I had to have a conversation with each parent during pick up to let them know of some changes with how expectations will be changed with kids touching and messing with other. Though I have two other staff one was cleaning, one was helping students with craft and I was to be filling out a report and then signing kids out and having that conversation about expectations. This student wouldn't let the conversation go about the craft and would try talking to me while I was trying to have the conversation with parents. None of my staff would help me with either the student or talking to parents. I quickly became overwhelmed especially when other students wouldn't ask the other two staff for help.

Today we had a party to celebrate site of the month with our students. This was such a great time to think about how amazing not only of a team of staff but a group with our students. We got to have an easter party and all the kids were excited and got to just be happy for themselves. We did talk about why they think we got the party and talk about the things they did well on. We reminded them that just because we have done well does not mean we get to stop being respectful and kind to one another. I think its always fun and special for students to not only get rewarded for the positive behavior but also recognized individually on what they can bring to the group as an individual. I think as someone who wants to be a teacher this makes me feel good in myself that I can help students and also keep classroom management. Small rewards help boost my confidence and allow me time to breath and know I am doing good.

When I walked in for the day I was not sure how the day was going to go. Yesterday, was our site of the month party so I was not sure how the students would act. I find it is very helpful for the day to go smoothly if everything is prepared for the day. When I get to my school I make sure that I prepare snack, set up paperwork, prepare opening activities and prep any activities that the students will be completing during the day. This helps my transition periods be smooth because I don't have to scramble on what to do next. This is extremely helpful if your students get antsy when there is too much in between times during lessons. I find that having an attention getter also helps students attention when either the noise level gets too loud. Attention getters are beneficial for all students to know when all attention should be on the and expectations are the same.

Building Positive Relationships

Something that I like to implement on building positive relationships is circle time. We do circle time everyday or ever other day during snack time to allow students a chance to share something about themselves. We do have some different topics we discuss like some things we as a class are struggling and rules we may be falling short on. We also share jokes with the children and then they have the opportunity to share theirs with each other. Everyday during snack if we don't have a shared discussion the students love to ask if they can do jokes. This is a fun way to just not really worry about work and is like a brain break during activities. I have found that having the time where we all come together makes a difference in their individual behavior but as a whole towards each other.

Positive reinforcement

I believe in positive reinforcement. I have seen many different ways of providing this not only as a class but individually as well. In my class I like to do a star chart, jobs, student of the week, and student of the month. To some this may sound a lot but I believe students strive for greatness when it is something that can benefit them. Everyday students have the opportunity to earn starts and based on the amount of stars students get an award at the end of the week. We provide weekly jobs that change to allow students the opportunity to have ownership in the class. Student of the week does not come from the amount of stars overall but I look for growth, patience, kindness towards others. This allows students who may struggle at earning stars and may focus on has the student grown overall in how they react or support of others. I also note what may influence behavior and modify the actions.

My first impressions on working in a professional setting with students was quite overwhelming. This semester I am going to be working at Taylor Elementary for my reading class with second grade. We will be teaching students phonics that they are struggling with. We have already assessed students and that was a bit intimidating because this was our first time. For me after doing the assessment on the first student I figured how the best way to make use of the time and which of the three would take the longest. The part that I struggled with was how to categorize the students based on the results of the assessments was the most difficult. I believe when I become a teacher this is going to be the area I struggle with the most.

Over the last couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to teach small group lessons to students at Taylor Elementary. I was pretty nervous when planning my lessons due to ensuring that I am teaching the rules for phonics to the students in a way that they understand. To my surprise my teacher thought they were well thought out and went really well when I was teaching them. I think my lessons are pretty simplistic and basic when it comes to the thought process and execution. As I am finishing and planning the next couple I hope to keep the simplicity of the rules and teaching that portion. When it comes to the comprehension portions I hope to elevate the pre and post reading activities. With this new opportunity I have found that it is actually really nice to do small groups with students who are struggling. When I was younger I was one of the students who was in a small group and I think this may be where I want to be after I begin teaching.

Over the past couple of weeks there have been many difficult things that I have been through but I have also learned from them. I have learned to be confident in my lessons and the knowledge I have with kids and structure. Teaching comes with a lot of great things but also some struggles. Every class and student are different and unique in their own way. I have found that while many teaching techniques work for most kids not all will have the same results. Kids are like sponges and as long as you fill them with confidence and teach them the important strategies to learn and comprehend them they will be able to retain the information. I have learned to not be so hard on yourself when you have bad days with a lesson or when a student doesn't listen or respond the way we want them to. I have also learned planning is always important and can make or break a lesson or even a day. Setting 10-20 minutes prior to the day starting and looking at the plans and setting out the things you can will help in the long run for when you are starting the lessons.
