When English 1302 began this semester, I was equal parts excited and nervous.

Since a young age I had enjoyed reading, so I was excited to take a course I would enjoy.

However, collage level English courses required group collaboration and possessed a higher difficulty level, so I was also nervous.

The first couple of weeks were slightly challenging as I learned the patterns and expectations of the class.

As the semester wore on, the anxiety I had felt was gradually slipping away and I began to truly enjoy the class.

Through this English course I grew both as a person and a writer by learning MLA formatting, how to analyse and interpret different texts, and participate in group collaboration.

Firstly, I was able to perfect MLA format.

Through previous classes I had acquired the basics of MLA format such as font, text size, and double spacing, but I have always struggled with the citations.

While google and easybib.com made creating a works cited page was fairly simple, the in text citations were more tricky.

I encountered the most trouble in essay three when more than one source was required.

Since I was being cautious with my quotations, I had included the title in the beginning of the sentence and listed it in parenthesis afterword.

Professor Fray noticed this and commented that I "Don't really need [the end citation] since you mentioned the title in your intro to the quote."

I now have a much greater understanding of how to complete in-text citations which will serve me better not only as a writer but in all my future academic endeavors.

Secondly, I learned how to analyse and interpret different kinds of texts.

Throughout the course I was presented with many different styles of short stories, poetry, and literary criticisms.

In essay three I was able to analyse "The Yellow Wallpaper" and, with the help of some critics, use a feminist lens to interpret it.

For the research essay, I took several of Emily Dickinson's poems and with the help of two critics I was able to interpret some of her poetry.

While in both cases the literary criticisms did help to prove my point, I first had to develop a point to prove.

English 1302 helped to develop my sense of understanding of different types of literature through the use of literary criticisms.

Thirdly, I was able to participate in group collaboration.

For the past several years I have suffered from social anxiety which is why I'm an online student.

This English class required participation in at least one or more discussion board each week.

At the beginning of the semester, it would take me hours to post my thread and replies, and I would then spend the rest of the day worrying about what I wrote.

There were a variety of reasons that caused my worry including what others would think, if I unintentionally offended somebody, or if my tone was brash.

As the semester went on without incident, the discussion boards became easier with each success.

While I still felt slightly anxious about the discussions, at the end of the semester I was able to complete them more quickly and go on with my day.

Through this English course I grew both as a person and a writer by learning MLA formatting, how to analyse and interpret different texts, and participate in group collaboration.

By participating in the group collaborations I was able to grow as a person by overcoming a portion of my social anxiety.

While at first the lack of a formal schedule was discerning, I remained resilient and continued the course.

I made adjustments to my schedule so that when the week's assignments were posted I had plenty of time to learn the necessary skills to complete them.

When I began this course, I had a rocky foundation for creating an essay outline until Professor Fray introduced us to Padlet. It has now become instinct to use Padlet as an outline for all my essays (link to this essay’s Padlet: https://padlet.com/makala_j_benefiel/y84wzrwbkpnk )

To ensure that I maintained an A average in all my classes, I dropped an extra class I had picked up. I was then able to display tenacity in all my courses and achieve the coveted grade of an A.

English 1302 allowed me to learn essential skills that will serve me for the rest of my life not only as a writer but as a person too.
