My dad was trying to decide whether he should quit his caffeine addiction. The headaches he got from drinking coffee were getting annoying, and he had to debate if staying awake and having his favorite drink was worth it.

His headaches would continue just as much. Any sort of benefit that he saw from caffeine was just from the comfort of drinking coffee. "The long term impact of our current behavior is hard to “see” compared to the immediate benefit" (Making Healthy Choices Unit 1 Section 3). He would continue to have high blood-pressure for as long as he took it.

"They pay attention to today’s risks," (Making Healthy ChoicesUnit 1 Section 3), and he could see no short-term benefits. His headaches would've continued from withdraw. These headaches would eventually stop and he would get over his addiction by drinking only 1 coffee a day. His blood pressure also lowered.

Dad chose to leave this addiction behind. "We must ask ourselves, at least for major decisions like health, if we’ve missed some long-term gains or risks because of how our brains typically operate" (Making Healthy Choices Unit 1 Section 3), and he decided that his love for coffee was not worth the headaches and small gains to alertness. He has been headache free since and he spends much less money on coffee.
