Functionalism:
- In the view of functionalism racial and ethnic inequalities must have served an important function in order to exist as long as they have.
- Another functionalist perspective to racism is to discuss the way racism can contribute positively to the functioning of society by strengthening bonds between in-groups members through the ostracism of out-group members.

Interactionism:
- For symbolic interactionists, race and ethnicity provide strong symbols as sources of identity. In fact, some interactionists propose that the symbols of race, not race itself, are what lead to racism.

Today, while working conditions have improved, conflict theorists, like Marxists, believe that the strained working relationship between employers and employees still exists. Capitalists and the bosses (bourgeoisie) own the means of production, and a system is in place to make business owners rich and keep workers (proletariat) poor. According to conflict theorists, the resulting stratification creates class conflict. Through a Marxist's view, a Capitalist society acts to create class stratification by any means so it's common for racial discrimination to occur within that boss-worker relationship.

It can be argued that throughout human history, racial discrimination and prejudice have been prevalent. It can be argued that it's an innate human response to try to separate one's self from those who are different or unfamiliar, but it's more likely that it has to do with our nurture rather than our nature. Society teaches us that we're different and that there's an "us" and a "them" which breeds aspects like discrimination.
